• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. Hi, can anyone recommend where to get winding sticks or should I make them? Timber stock is limited at the moment to oak which I don’t know would be suitable. I have a 1m length of right angled aluminium. Could I use that to make a pair?

Exactly what I was thinking.

I’ve seen a few guides and vids on making your own like the one in Phil’s link, but access to quality hardwoods is not great. I was thinking, I could use these ones for the workbench build in the short term and then (try to)make a quality pair.
 
Any two straight bits of wood will do. They don't even have to be the same in any dimension. Pull something out of the scrap bin, pass a plane over them, and away you go.

I’ve got a tendency to over complicate things Mike. Thanks for the tip. I’ll give them both a go, because why not?
 
I normally use a couple of Metre long building levels.

I have these anyway, so why not dual use them, they work very well.

Just be careful if you buy some of the really cheap Chinese/ plastic ones though - levels in name only!

But you don't need to know if the wood is level. You've only checking for twist.
 
I’ve settled for using 2 pieces of oak taken from the frame of an old dining table. Dimensionally they’re the same and are doing a grand job.

That's true as long as they're both parallel. If one's slightly out of kilter it'll show that the wood's twisted when it's actually fine, but agreed, you don't need anything fancy. I'm still using the one's I made around forty years ago - Rob
