yet another workshop (re)build

You may recall we have had an extension built on the back of our house which necessitated the demolition of the corner of my single garage workshop. Finally I may have some time to start putting it back in working order.

Having repaired the roof and joined up the walls as matters of urgency the inside had been left a bit of a mess.

I started rewiring it and stopped when I realised I have no idea how to lay it out and where I'll need sockets. So fire up Sketchup....

Think I'm getting somewhere working out where things fit.

First problem I'm looking at is the mitre saw and the amount of space it takes up. It used to live on a high benchtop over the planer thicknesser which is deep but it doesn't work out there now. Allowing for the slide it needs a lot of depth from a wall.... then it sits there most of the time just getting in the way.

So I'm wondering if I can make a flip over cabinet for it.

In use (drawing is just a download so no obvious slide out the back like my DeWalt)

and then when not needed flipped 180 deg

And maybe a drop in bench surface to fill the gap.

Has it been done before? and is it worth the effort?

I'll post some pictures soon. just getting my forum mojo back. We've had a torrid time with the extension flooring and manufacturing faults that is still not resolved so I've been a bit distracted and annoyed lately!

I've made a roll out and flip over storage for my thicknesser which I wrote up on the the old haven.

Works well for me. Whether you can get accurate enough registration in both level and with extension fences for long work is something to consider.

So I've been allowed some time back in the workshop!

I moved most of what can go against a wall against the brick wall of the new extension that has taken the corner out of the workshop I used to have..

Then i moved some more stuff. You may have noticed the SCMS has gone from the bench.

The (SCMS) chop saw is useful when I need it but the rest of the time it is in the way. Problem is it needs about 950mm front to back when it is in use and can't be used if it is too close to a wall.
I like to have everything the same height and couldn't do that as it was.

So I came up with this out of shuttering ply -

Flip over didn't work out so its drop down instead.

The work surface just lifts off. 2 pegs keep it located. You can see the pivot bolt on the top corner of the side panel.

Pull the saw up and lift to horizontal

put some bolts into holes and ready to go.

I think its a good idea but not certain yet! Downside is the amount of lost space for storage that it lives in. The sides are only held by the back and base panels so the front top corners can move a bit. maybe doors on the front will help.

It used to be up high on a table over the planer thicknesser but if it was there now I wouldn't be able to cut anything long.

Loads more to do in there. No power to one side yet as all the electrics got disturbed in the building work. At least I have a decent supply now so no worries about pulling too much power any more.

I have lots of drawers from the outgoing kitchen (some are in the foreground of the 1st picture) so a reworked bench with all drawers under it is on the to do list.

Something tells me I'll be pointed at something more urgent soon and not be left to get on with it.
