• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

For a project I hope to start in the next 6 months I am going to need an air nailer gun. It would be nice if it also fired staples. So I am after recommendations for that. I would also like to use plastic nails/ pins, 30 or 35mm long. I have seen these used in US Youtube builds, but can't seem to find them for sale over here. Has anyone come across these?

I have only ever seen the raptor plastic nails used in the UK - as deck pinnings when replacing sections of teak boat deck whilst the glue goes off. Zero corrosion risk and much cheaper than copper. There is also a brand called Senco, if they are still going, but I know nothing about them.

Mike, IIRC I have an Axminster gun doing nothing. You are very welcome to have it on (very) long term loan.

Thanks chaps. That's fantastic. I'll take a closer look later on.

Just as importantly, you can sand them. It was on a boat-building channel that I first saw plastic nails/ pins, used precisely as you describe.

Exactly. You can sand copper pins as well and they blend in. If you do super neat cross pinning on deckwork to a marked line, it looks really good. Plastic nails become virtually invisible.

Is there a colour choice of plastic nails Mike?
I've no idea, Duke. I'm finding it hard enough to find any at all, let alone ones of different colours. Ideally I'd like dark brown, but frankly they'd be all but invisible even if they were luminescent green, given how small they are.

That's the first time I've ever heard of plastic nails for a nail gun, I have seen plastic staples before though as that's what they usually use for putting the shipping papers on Accoya packs. All the timber merchants should use the plastic staples, it's an absolute nightmare when you miss a steel staple and it wrecks your planer knives just after you've changed them.

Looks like you need the special Omer gun for the plastic nails? Omer have always been very expensive and the guns aren't as reliable as you would like for the money.

Another thought, Mike, is to get the Lumberjack rechargeable nailer/stapler. I've got one and it is excellent. Beats having all that piping getting in the way.

I have the Aldi version of the lumberjack, which looks like it has come out of the same factory. It has been quite handy, but does jam sometimes so I don’t think it is the best, but built for a value point. I haven’t seen plastic nails for it which could be really useful.

Guys - plastic nails require a special gun. You can't just use them in any cheap nailer or even the more Pro DeWalt etc. Omer guns are the ones that are in almost universal use in the boatyards over here, Netherlands, Italy and Croatia etc. They don't jam and make a mess of your very expensive decking woodwork by over punching. :) Most of the plastic nails I have seen over the years state that they are made for Omer nailers. The guns are the same kind of money as a premium battery or gas nailer such as paslode or DeWalt, and the plastic nails aren't cheap either. :(Plastic nails are brilliant though as they sand to almost invisible, and wont knacker edge tools or sanding papers. Set up properly they drive in dead flush and you don't need to fill any depressions. Used a lot for anchoring teak decking and for patching teak decks (which are usually left unfinished as they are washed all the time by seawater or crew! )

The problem with the combi nailer/staple guns is that the firing pin is sized for staples so even if you are just using pins you still get a staple sized dent in the wood, depends what you are using it for whether this matters or not.
