• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Timber Delivery

Excellent. What's the project?

I've never worked with cherry. Odd omission from my CV, I suppose, but it's just never cropped up.

That looks like a lovely pile of good stuff. I’ve only used it once back in the early days, I wanted to make a tiptop table, but the wood twisted so badly I gave up on it. Probably with a planer and a bit more experience I could have dealt with it.
Making a table?

I have wardrobes and chests of drawers to make (another much delayed project).
It is wonderful wood to work with and this is the best Am Cherry I have found in the UK
I have made a Maloof style rocker with it in the past as well as two side tables and my tool cupboard
It will be nice to do straight square woodworking after these chairs.

My old kitchen unit doors were cherry and I've recycled some into jigs because it's so dense and stable.

All sorted, stacked and sticked where it will stay until the chairs are finished.

It’s a really enjoyable wood to work with and frequently has very attractive figuring.
Yep, agreed

I've only used it for a box or two, but it struck me as a very nice wood to work with. Not American-Black-Walnut-nice (is anything?) but it planes and chisels very nicely.
Currently working with Swiss Pear which is easily as good as Walnut of all denominations, but quite a bit harder. Lacking in grain figuration though, but that's about all - Rob

My favourite furniture wood. Works well with hand and machine tools, smells nice (to me). One thing I particularly like is that it darkens and looks better as it ages.

The only downside is that when it is flatsawn it can finish blotchy. Usually requires a seal coat of shellac before any other finish to avoid or at least reduce that. It can also have pitch pockets, which some people don't like but I find attractive.

I especially like it quartersawn.

Somebody is feeling a bit flush :)
It's fantastic stuff. I made an entire dinng suite from it - extending table, 8 chairs, sideboard, dresser, bookcase, demilune table and fire surround. Now all gone, sadly (though I know that the demilune has gone to a good home).
I still have a cherry doorbell-cum-key-cupboard, awaiting recommissioning.

I am not sure they let us have quarter sawn in the UK I think you lot keep it to yourself.
I prefer the through and through sawn stuff and occasionally you get a board with some ripple on it. I think there are two such boards in todays batch

I've made 3 or 4 pieces of furniture from American Cherry. I found it nice to work with and it turns a beautiful darker colour when exposed to the light.
