• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Photo size?

Sure I've missed this but I always upload photos from phone but the new forum just says too big? Do I have to resize the photo before hand or is there a way to do it in the forum software?

How are you trying to do it?
On my iPhone I do the following:
- click the Attach files button below the reply box
- choose Photo Library
- select the photo(s) I want to add
- if they are going to be too big then click the options button bottom left & change size of photo
- upload...

however I have just tested and there seems to be no issue just selecting the photo and not changing the size - the uploader auto-resizes it to 1200 x 900 and the resultant image is below the file size limit...

Testing image size issues...picture is pano, 11582 x 3828 and 7.8MB

Drag and drop straight from Photos on iMac. Worked fine.

Exported from Photos drag/drop...Same size in pixels but 9.5MB and it failed, 'The uploaded file is too large.', hmmmm.
FAILED!

Exported from Photos the inserted using 'Attach files' button...'The uploaded file is too large.', hmmmm.
FAILED.

Below two large panoramas dragged and dropped into the insert picture button.

Need to look into this more as it's obviously a quirk.

I had an issue with a photo on here the other day, it was only 1.2MB but it kept getting refused for being too large, I ended up uploading it to Imgur and linking to it instead.

I think it's a quirk with the uploading method because even tiny files are being caught with it. A bug of some kind because the same picture uploaded two different ways has two different outcomes.

Interestingly, I've had no issues uploading until I used the "RAW' format recently when the uploading widget took a dislike to the pic. When I took the pic again using the ordinaries format there was no issue; I guess the file size in RAW was too big or somat - Rob

I got a new iPhone and so the photo sizes are even bigger 2.2mb seems to be average. I cannot upload them to the forum is there a quick way to re-size them for uploading on the forum or will I need to host them on my one drive and re-size them?

2.2mb should not be a problem to upload.
What method are you using? Drag and drop or selecting an image from Photos using the icon above?
This image was 6.1mb before uploading from Ipad

Fortunately do not have that problem as I re-size all the photos off the phone-camera to save space on laptop disk.

Andy, it is the latter. I cannot upload on Mac, or iPad!

What format are you using ? I seem tp recall having issues with large files of one of the formats but can't recall which one. Possibly png

I cant upload .heic from the amazon tablet so I use Postimage
as a go between
A bit of a faff but with some forums a third party hosting site is it the only way with any device

RAW files are proprietary to each camera maker, all different. Most web software does not accept them simply because there are so many. Stick to jpg, it's universal.

As for file sizes, there is not much point in uploading big files, the screens you view them on are mostly roughly 2000px wide, the rest is just a waste of bandwidth and of storage space. A jpg file of about 250k is plenty big enough for on-screen viewing. Keep the big files for prints - there you can see the difference !

I leave it to others to explain the differences as this image taken with the iPad 9th Gen (ios 26.2) in HEIF format uploads without an issue. Is HEIC unique to iPhone? Is there an option in iPhone Camera setting to select HEIF over HEIC as well as .jpeg?

Hmm. I have just changed the format as you suggest and I still cannot upload a file. I had no problem until recently when I changed phones. I can still upload older photos.
OK so I have changed the Photo Mode from 24MP to 12MP and can now upload. Looks like I will need to re-size all photos since I swapped my phone. Unless there is some other way around this?

I can help you. Why don't we swap phones and you can use my Samsung as I know that works fine. I think it's a great idea ;)

Re-sizing on the Mac does not seem to work. I tried saving them as JPEG and reducing the file size to 1.3MB. But that failed. New photos since I changed all the camera settings are OK. Tis beyond my pay grade and my IT expert is in Toronto for Xmas.

Thanks a weird one and if you look back in this thread I did a piece about my testing, which came out inconclusive.

I’ve been through my photos and some save from iPhone to photos as jpg and some as HEIC, and some of the HEIC’s will upload and others won’t…

It doesn’t make any sense at all, so I gave up at that point!

I don’t think the issue is 100% or 100% apple, but an annoying and inconsistent mix of the two.

I haven’t got any time to look into this right now, so if anyone else does then please feel free, otherwise it will have to wait until I do have time.

HEIF is a container, it can contain a jpg but also other formats such as video. When a HEIF container has HEVC coded info inside it, it is often called a HEIC format.

Support of HEIC outside of the Apple world is quite limited at the moment.

Taking web browsers as an example, as of November 2025, only Safari supports HEIC format natively.

Edge, Chrome, Firefox and Opera for Windows and Android support AVIF. Safari on iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 supports AVIF format.

I'm not an expert but I would not be surprised to find that XF2 has some compatibility issues with HEIC.

Stick with jpgs !

Interesting! I’m going to try my testing again (tomorrow) because all of that was done in Chrome, so I’ll try Safari…
