The only time I've ever got caught was on the A303 heading towards the M3. A patrol car with clearly nothing better to do was pulling motorists over with dirty number plates, where the lettering/numbers are all but legible. If the boys in blue can't read your number plate, you'll get a ticket, so now my 'good deed for the day' during the autumn/lwinter is to inform the yummy mummies in the WR car park that their bigly, huge, vast Merc 'Chelsea tractor' (or similar) is breaking the law.
