• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Ovoloe or Gothic spoke shave

Thanks Andy, as usual you've put a lot of work into your explanation and I really appreciate it. I've sent a link to Robin, reading it himself will be far better than me trying to explain it to him. Cheers, Geoff.

    Ovoloe or Gothic spoke shave

Hi DaveL, Here are a couple of (poor quality) photo's. It wouldn't surprise me if these are the names that Preston and Mathieson used for their tools to discern them from other makers, even though they do the same job. Cheers, Geoff.

    Ovoloe or Gothic spoke shave

Hi all, first up, let me say I have no idea what I'm talking about here, but......... A friend of mine has a pretty extensive collection of spokeshaves which, I must say, he certainly knows how to use. Some are called Ovoloes and some Gothic but both cut the same profile and he was wondering...

    Flat tang bits.

Thanks Andy, I should have mentioned that the brace has no identifying marks whatsoever. I've got perhaps four or five of these braces, all in various states of disrepair, this the only one with the dual bit chuck and it's not got the original thumbscrew. Cheers, Geoff.

    Flat tang bits.

Hi All, I have a handful of flat tang bits comprising centre bits and gimlets. They are used in this Gentlemens brace which can also accommodate common square tang bits. The majority of my bits are German or Swedish, one may be British. According to an article I read in a TATHS publication...

    James Chapman Braces.

I have seen two variations of branding on the chuck shells of Chapman's lower grade braces before they became Stanley. Earlier models read: Manufactured by J.A. Chapman Sheffield England. Later, transitional (my term): J. A. CHAPMAN. MADE IN ENGLAND. BY STANLEY WORKS, (GB) LTD. As I was...

    James Chapman Braces.

Thanks Argus and Alf, yes that's the intertwined JAC trade mark first registered by James Chapman in 1894. Alf, sadly the thumbscrew on the No 77 is not original, much to my annoyance. One of my examples with the 566 is a 10in very similar to the No 43 although it doesn't have that number on...

    James Chapman Braces.

Hi all, I've a few James Chapman made in Sheffield braces in my collection four of which have, after the BRITISH JAC MADE branding, the number 566 in a circle. Two examples in the photo are a No 77 wagon builders brace and a No 43 10in carpenters brace. Does anyone know the significance of the...

    Rapier Gateshead England braces.

Hello, I've had these two Rapier braces for a few years and am finally getting around to researching them, and what better place to ask questions than here? They are both very well made braces with Bakelite head and handles and nice tight ratchet selectors. The lower one has stamped on the...

    Keen Breast Drill

Hi, a friend of mine has this breast drill branded KEEN inside an elongated triangle on the handle crank. The only information on this drill, he's been able to find, is it was made by M C Gooding of Croydon, England. Apparently this company ceased operations in 1959. Can any of you...

    Wynn Timmins Washer cutter query.

Hi all, here I go again, looking for information. I have just been given a Wynn Timmins washer or circle cutter with a very clear Reg No 694232 and the Heart logo stamped on the shank. I have searched for this number, with no success. I think it dates from about 1922. I will appreciate any help...

Robert Scaife. Swanfield Tool Works. Colne

Hi all, I just picked up this chain drill, branded "Robert Scaife. Maker - Colne." This is the first British made chain drill I've seen, all my others are made in USA. For those of you whose education was sadly lacking I'll explain the workings of this tool. The chuck end will hold a 1/2inch...

    Rye & CO Swindon

Thanks Andy, I knew you'd come to my rescue. Incidentally the smallest bit in this set is 1/8in diameter which is the smallest centre bit I've ever encountered. Thanks for your welcome Andy, it took a while for me to find you. Cheers, Geoff.

    Rye & CO Swindon

HI all, I picked up a handful of nice centre bits branded Rye & Co Swindon. I've found a reference to Edwards, Boys and Rye of Swindon but don't know whether that pre or post dates my set. I've posted a couple of photos, any help will be appreciated. Cheers, Geoff.
