• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    NPT Thread Helicoil

Thanks SB! We did wonder about the thread being American and for pipes, but went with it as the lad found reference to it on a site and we couldn't match the thread to anything else - we've measured a few times and keep coming up with 18 TPI and 1/2" diameter. That doesn't equate to either BA or...

    NPT Thread Helicoil

Does anyone know where we can buy one from? - I understand it's a 1/4" NPT that we need, to replace the thread in a 1/2" hole (I have no idea why 1/4" for a 1/2" hole, but we read that on a BSA Bantam site). We've searched online and can only find really expensive npt helicoil kits, it'd be far...

Learning to use a Myford 7 lathe

Bob - when we got the lathe I checked the date and think it was 77 or maybe 78, but I can't find the serial years now for the R model - our no is KR135267, in case anyone has it to hand? Ours came with the clutch fitted form new it seems, but unfortunately no gear box - tho I guess that's what...

Learning to use a Myford 7 lathe

Thanks Dr Al - I guess the best way forward is to get a few of each (carbon/ HSS) and try them out; as you say, the carbon ones are cheap enough. I'll order some up and we'll give them a go. ps At the risk of side-tracking my own thread, the 'machine shop' is expanding! It'll allow us to learn...

Learning to use a Myford 7 lathe

Any ideas what this might be? Each end is MT2, male near camera, female the other end; it unscrews to reveal two lines of ball bearings each side of a plate, and there's a grub screw which I suppose stops the ends rotating in relation to each other; and it's marked A.H. Ltd - would that be...

Learning to use a Myford 7 lathe

We've looked at the MIG forum before, the lad's doing a welding course and the site's been useful but I'd not noticed machining (I wasn't looking for it) - we'll revisit that Dr Al. We had a go at one of the mild steel samples yesterday, the fella at the supplier kindly wrote the metal grades...

Learning to use a Myford 7 lathe

I've been umming and ahhing about this for a couple of years, and finally went ahead and bought one. I was looking for a Super 7 but an ML7-R with clutch came up, and it turned out that the fella selling it was a former colleague who'd worked in the engineering department where I started working...

    Imperial Spanner Sizes?

Can anyone advise how we're to understand the size of this spanner? I've read a bit about BSW/ BSF, but what I can't see is how the fraction of an inch indicated relates to the size of the spanner. Is it the radius? If so, why?! We've got loads of these from my Dad's garage and it'd be good to...

    Plant ID?

A couple of years ago we had to have a silver birch removed from the garden. I plan to plant one or two more in its place, but have noticed something growing from directly next to/ up against the remainder of the trunk. Does anyone know what it is? It'd be nice if it were another brand of tree...

    Espresso coffee grinder recommendation?

I recently dug out my Gaggia Classic and am very happy it still works fine, after several years in a cupboard. I want to try grinding the beans and am told I need a burr grinder - some are pretty cheap, some the opposite. Any recommendations for something decent, up to about £100? Thanks for...

    Cheap-ish polytunnel recommendation?

Happy with the way it's been going - lots of tomatoes, a few cucumbers, lots of chilis, lettuce is good, all the strawberries (there weren't many) scoffed. Quick question - some of the upper trusses are still just flowers - should we cut them off now so lower tomatoes develop in time to ripen...

    Knife ID?

PS - I should have included these pics with the first post. We also found these odd-looking things - any ideas?

    Knife ID?

I'm not sure where to post this, as I have no idea what the knife might be used for. Clearing out mum's garage at the weekend, we found this knife that had belonged to my dad. It has a leather handle, a thick back (5mm) as if it's made for hitting and is about 210mm long. I've no idea if it...

    Cheap-ish polytunnel recommendation?

Thanks Andy - I found the book on Internet Archive and have started looking at the relevant sections, really helpful. We're in Wales, so damp and mild. And lots of slugs. Some high-end cabinet making done today - I couldn't bring myself to spend money on the nasty shelf units at the DIY sheds...

    Cheap-ish polytunnel recommendation?

That'll do us - endless spring and summer fun! It's mostly well pegged in (I made 15" wooden pegs to use instead of the silly thin wire ones supplied), shelves and a table to sort. I was planning on building them ourselves but looked at the price of CLS and decided I'll just buy some shelves to...

    Cheap-ish polytunnel recommendation?

It'd be for growing tomatoes, chilis, more delicate herbs and that kind of thing.Hoping to get it in very soon. Up to about £150, 3m x 2m. Green or clear? I've looked around the net a bit and can't tell the good from the bad. I'll be moving in a couple of years, so it's either one that just...

    Airline ticket prices

My lad's planning to book a long-haul flight later today, some fares have shot up and others not so much. I told him that I think I remember a past fuel crisis in which airlines put up prices after booking and payment. Can anyone confirm that they can do that, or otherwise? I just did a search...

    Import question

Hopefully a simple one: I need to order car parts from Germany. I will pay the company supplying the parts for VAT and delivery. Can I expect extra charges/ costs from UK customs or anyone else for importing? Thanks Chris

Tape to seal splits for resin

I recently had to fill a split going right through the wood before turning, and made a terrible mess. I used regular (blue) masking tape to seal the underside before pouring in epoxy resin. It found tiny gaps and I spent far too long trying to collect the excess from below, dropping it back into...

    Some actual.....you know........woodwork.

Bath racks are a lot like toasters, you can never find the right size. So I made one from some scraps off an old bed base. I'm not sure it's what you'd call 'actual woodwork', Mike, but it's wood and I did the work. (Slightly ashamed to post after seeing Fiveeyes' work, above.)
