• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    New toy

I’ve been regretting getting rid of my drum sander for ages (downsizing forced many ‘unpleasant’ decisions to be made) and looking for a replacement has proved interesting. Second hand values were stupid and every time I thought I was close the price seemed to rocket. I then found that...

    What wood?

I’m very much not a fan of what wood is this posts but I’m desperate so what wood is this?! It’s our current kitchen worktop and I’ve spent hours trying to track it down with absolutely no success at all. We’re going to extend and my wife loves this and wants to keep it if at all possible so...

    Box finish

My go to finish for nearly all my boxes is shellac and wax. The one I’m currently working on is likely to receive more handling than many (which are mostly ornamental). It has quite a bit of wenge highlights/details and being quite coarse grain I’d like to try and ‘fill’ it a bit first. The joy...

    19 or 20 mm?

That is the question! I'm about to drill in to my new bench top for the attachment of work holding devices and find myself wondering if I should go for 19 or 20 mm? I've always managed before on a heath Robinson set up as drilling into my old bench was frought with danger for drill bits due...

    Mac help

I've been struggling with this one for a while and despite quite deep diving on google and apple sites haven't managed to find a solution. All our music and photos were downloaded from our old windows based machine onto a hard drive and then loaded onto the Mac. For some reason the photos are a...

    New Bench Top

Many years ago (over 30 in fact) I made my first 'temporary' bench top of laminated 3 x 2. I didn't have a clamp to my name back then so every length was screwed to the next. Now this made for and incredibly robust top that has taken real welly over the years. However, any attempt to drill into...

    Vice restoration

Following on from the thread about a new vice I’m now in the process of carrying out some light restoration. I’ve managed to remove all the silver spray paint that was applied to all exposed metalwork (including the screw thread) and just wondering what to treat the metal with? Obviously oil is...

    Vice prices - Update

After much searching picked this up today: A 50 minute drive and all for the princely sum of £40. For some reason the previous owner spray painted all the metalwork silver. Thankfully without properly preparing the surface so it wire brushes off failrly easily. The blue is a bit naff and...

    Vice prices - Update

I’m rebuilding my bench and thought I’d replace the old axminster record copy with a proper 52 1/2 until I saw the prices! I’ve got long pockets/short arms but £80 for what look to be some examples on the poorer side of life appears high to me. The market is restricted because few are willing...

    Rebate Plane Blade

Sorry to labour this but I really want to get it right. By coincidence I have quite a lot of rebating to do so this is the best time to get it right. I'm struggling to understand some of what's being recommended so I've taken a couple of photos to help illustrate my understanding. The blade is...

    Rebate Plane Blade

I’ve got a few rebate planes and whilst they don’t get used that often they are invaluable when needed. My question my seem a bit numpty but should the iron be the same size as the body of the plane? Photo to illustrate: As you can see the blade is a good millimetre wider than the body and...

    Amazon Prime Next Day

….. isn’t anymore! Is it me but just lately I’ve noticed that ‘next day’ is now the day after? Thought it was a quirk of the stuff I was after but it does now seem to have become standard. We are a bit in the sticks (South Somerset) but by no means the a-hole of nowhere. A shift in policy or...

    Salvageable?

I know there will be some ‘told you so’ but I’m wondering if this veneered lid is considered salvageable by those who know about veneering? ‘Base’ is just over 6mm oak and the veneer ranges between 2.5 & 3.5mm. I was hoping that solid wood would obviate the need for balancing (it’s worked in...

    Coopered lid box

My daughters partner does a lot of landscaping work and gave me a bit of old oak post and jokingly said ‘make something out of that’. So I did. The mark on one of the pins is a timber defect not a burn mark! The hinges are really rather naff ones I’ve had hanging around for ages. Didn’t...

    Box side ‘thickness’

I’m going to make a box for my sisters wedding present using oak burr veneer which will bit a little over 2 mm when finished. I have a wide range of plywood to use as the base but just had one of those brain fart moments when working out how thick the sides (and front and back!) should be. For...

    More boxes …..

Yet more boxes from the offcut stash. Here we have burr oak veneer with wenge trimmings Sycamore and sapele And another ‘bits and pieces’ one from oak and rosewood All are based on a 6mm ‘base box’ and then everything planted on as required. No sign of any movement despite no...

    Couple of scrap boxes

I suspect like many I struggle to throw away all those little bits and pieces of timber thinking ‘that’ll come in useful one day’. I’ve been carting all sorts of ‘stuff’ through a number of house moves and decided that a lot of this ‘stuff’ finally had to go. So I started the grand sort out...

    Large sanding sheets

Does anyone know where I can get larger than normal sanding sheets for flattening boxes? Can’t seem to find anything suitable anywhere. I guess buying a belt and then cutting it up is an option but they look to be silly money. Thanks

    Antivirus for Mac?

I don’t have anything on my new machine but a bit of reading leads me to believe I probably should? Is it necessary and if so any recommendations? Remember that I’m tight/a poor pensioner! Thanks

    Energy costs

I’ve just had my latest tariff information through from BG based on the energy cap. Electricity only, 28.408p kwh (was 21.607). Daily charge 51.626p per day up from 25.664p. Don’t think the kwh increase was too bad but doubling the daily charge feels a bit like urine removal! More concerning...
