• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I’m looking for some stop butt hinges. Choice appears to be limited to either Brusso (bit ugly out the back) or the smart butt (eye wateringly expensive).

I’ve found the thread on here that shows both being installed and the smart hinge definitely looks more ‘professional’ and would be my choice if it weren’t for the cost. I need three pairs so over £200 for the polished stainless steel.

Is anyone aware of other stop butts that won’t break the bank?

And before anyone asks It’s got to be butts because the box shape won’t allow accurate routing for the jewellery box hinges.

I can't recommend any but will probably buy the brass version (currently unavailable) of the SmartButt for SWIMBO's jewellery box when I get a round to making it...have you a linkie to the thread on their installation please? TIA. As it's going to be a fairly big box, a normal pair of SmartHinge's won't be robust enough - Rob

Sorry Rob, it’s more of an impressions when fitted as opposed to a how to fit thread

Stuart, try Nichelocks (part of A E Squire) and Prokraft to see if they have anything that doesn’t break the bank. The quality won’t be the same as SmartHinges/butt however they are the Rolls Royce of hinges!

@Woodbloke Rob - I’ve found that even when Andrew C’s website shows sold out if you contact him direct he can normally find a pair or two!

There is a simple method of getting the effect of a stop hinge while using ordinary butt hinges. You run a chamfer along the edge of the lid, and optionally a matching one along the top edge of the box. Then you set the hinge so that the barrel sits back within the thickness of the wood, inside the chamfer. That way, when you open the lid, the chamfers meet with the lid at the right sort of angle.

There is a risk of too much strain on the hinges, which could split the wood if handled roughly. A lot would depend on the strength of the wood used, its thickness, the length of the screws and the carefulness of the user, so it wouldn't be suitable in every case but I mention it just in case.
