When I bought a new VW in December 2013 I never realised that it came with Bluetooth hands free phone and media player option. I had always thought this was an overpriced extra and not being one to read any manual properly (especially when written in a foreign language) I just forgot about it.
I am, however, a serial button pusher and waiting for my daughter to finish school the other day I started pressing the buttons that controlled the MFD (multi functional display) and all of a sudden it asked me if I wanted to be paired with a mobile phone (as it happens in the car parked next to me). Although my phone has bluetooth it is always switched off to conserve power. Low and behold when I switch it on it found the car, paired and bob's your uncle hands free.
Now perhaps I could get the iPod touch to connected too. No chance. Couldn't find each other. This time I resorted to reading the manual, iPod and Car, and the bluetooth versions and protocols implied it should work. Then I went on line and discovered that sometimes the protective covers can obstruct the bluetooth signal. Removed the cover Bingo, paired and working in no time. Replaced the cover and it still works. Perhaps it needs a stronger signal to do the initial handshake and security check.
Happy to have got it working, kicking myself for waiting more than a year.
