• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. 8mm bolts that will rust !

Yesterday our 20 year old ancient elm door to the walled garden sheared all four screws holding the hinge post to the wall. While re-fixing it, I decided to replace the bottom board (ledge-and-brace) but this needs 3 x 8mm bolts (50 or 60mm long) and nuts . All the ones I have are zinc or coated with something to stop them rusting but I want them to rust to blend in. So what should I search for on eBay?

I'm also after four good old fashioned slotted 12 x 3" steel screws as all mine are too short. At the moment, the hinge post is secured with Spax and they don't really 'go'.

That's an awful lot of work, Mark...and very fiddly not to mention sanding off my fingertips!
 
In my experience the zinc coating doesn't last long - paint them with rust coloured paint or all of them black? :)

I've got a load of old screws- I'll have a look, but didn't use 12's very much?

Unplated is usually referred to as 'self colour' so search for self colour bolts. Having had a quick look it seems a lot of ebay sellers think chemi black is self colour so you'll find a lot of socket cap screws as well with that search.

If you want your metal fixings to blend in, and you definately have to use M8 bolts, then how about brass? It'll be a bit shiny at first but will soon dull down after the first winter, or you can dull them down with an alkaline solution before fitting. And the great thing about brass fittings, is that they won't rust through and need replacing. If you live near a boatyard, go and have a look down there.

Or you could use old boatbulders copper nails. Plenty of them available on ebay (I've been buying some for a sculpture project).
