• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I am idly considering making a thickness sander - I have salvaged the motor and pulley blocks from an old pillar drill and there are various plans on the web - the ones at woodgears being a good bet. What I am not clear on however is how to mount the shaft.

I think I need pillow blocks to hold bearings, but how does one attach the shaft to the bearing - is it simply a friction fit? Or does the shaft go through the bearing which is simply used as a support? Next question - is there a decent UK supplier? I can see some on e-bay but have no idea if these are good quality or rubbish?!

Cheers,

Steve

Pillow blocks have sleeve with a grub screw to secure the shaft. Woodworking does not call for extreme accuracy so buy on price form a UK vendor eBay or otherwise. I've used Bolton bearings in the past. Simply bearing and bearing boys can be a bit dearer. Check out the forum buyers guide. This is what it is there for!!

No worries Steve. Apologies if I sounded grumpy.
In the buyers guide we try to put places to buy things outside the run of the mill woodworking needs.
We try to answer the where the hell do I get one of these questions. All suggestions welcome and we will update the guide from time to time.

They sound like an '80's pop group !

Thanks chaps - I have the bearings now, but a nightmare work situation is eating up all my time currently so have done nothing with them. I have plans though, I have plans..... ;)

I've been buying quite a few bearings for a current mechanical project and have had good service and keen pricing from these Ebay shops.

I also found some parts I wanted from Bolton bearings via their ebay shop and then went direct via their website and saved about 25%. So the moral seems to be, well worth checking direct as ebay and paypal between them cost vendors quite a bit which some will share with you.
