• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Beginners Woodworking Category

thanks for the clarification - that is not a standard option on the XenForo forum software - so they must have a bespoke plugin or similar...
The XenForo admin allows us to set how long since someone has not been on before they receive a reminder email (currently 14 days) and at what point to give up (currently 6 months of no use = stop sending) - there is also a danger in mass sending any emails on a regular basis as that is read as a spam pattern and risks getting the domain blacklisted...

All this has got me thinking about what a beginner might want to look for and get help from, I’m thinking bits on topics like marking out, setting up a plane, etc, almost like a reference book.
Sort of permanently to hand without searching (which I find an almost waste of time tbh) . So I looked for stickies? Have I got that right? Like Mikes workshop build stuff, I thought it was easily accessible but I can’t see it/them.
So my suggestion is that we prepare some short informative sections on different elements of basic woodworking that can easily be referenced.
Whether we can agree on the content of the chapter on sharpening is a moot point lol.

I like the "Beginners Corner" as mentioned by MartinF.
Eoin Reardon is a young Irishman with very good videos he has produced, which show interesting projects with minimal tools.
I like his work.

I would be very up for a 'beginner's corner' which was a set of stickies guiding people to posts that already exist / resources / etc. that would I think be a great jumping off point and an easy way of curating such material - however such a resource would not be a discussion area I think - having been a beginner myself and still not being far off - the fastest way to acquire skills is to jump in and do - so I would rather see people getting involved and not feeling that they are cordoned off into one section of the forum until they have demonstrated how to cut a dovetail joint / sharpen a chisel and turn a bowl...

Thanks Alasdair for the explanation of the forum software used. If the forum admin do decide to look further on this as something for the future I do feel it would be something to benefit from and increase members participation.

The DD I receive is just one email with a list of the 'subjects' being discussed along with a 'number' for new posts made to X thread... Usually received sometime early morning (06:30?). Each 'subject' listed links to that thread so clicking on it takes you directly to the discussion. Sorry for the description on how it works as you may already be aware 🙏

Thanks - I am not anti it - so if others also think this is useful - do let us know and I can explore what might be possible...

And any online content that can be trusted, ie not just there for some adverse reason like getting followers or demonstrating a dangerous practice which someone new might not pick up on.

I’m thinking how each topic would be prepared, I imagine each would be done by a different one of us as befits our specialities? Then open to comments and discussion before being loaded up as a stickie?
Takes me back to preparing lesson plans lol.

This could be a possible project for beginners.
Firewood Storage Box - made using salvage spalted maple or any material, sheet goods etc.
Assembled with screws with reinforcing straps at the top corners. Very sturdy and can be built by a beginner in less than four hours.
It has taken a beating for thirteen winters.
