• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. I just made myself a bow saw/ frame saw (someone will soon tell me what I've actually made! :) ). I've wanted one for a while, because I've found it an almighty faff to change blades in the bandsaw just to cut a curve or two. By the time I've done that and set everything up again properly, I'd have finished the job with a bow saw. So I pulled a couple of bits of scrap pine out of my scrap bin and made this:

I have since put the same finish on the knobs as on the rest of the saw. I guess the whole thing took 3 or 4 hours, and was all made up in the workshop. No drawings or anything. I cut up a 6mm bandsaw blade , which is held by a pin through a slot in a bit of 10mm mild steel rod at each end.

The only thing is I am not sure if I have possibly made it a bit too big. It's about 380mm in blade length. How does this compare with what you guys have?

To me yours is a bow saw. Which is, as I would expect, much more refined than my frame saw. Your bow saw could not be used like this:-

Yes, I've seen those (and some much bigger). They strike me as being suited to two people sawing together. It's just that my dad called his saw, the same as my saw, a frame saw. Mind you, he was wrong about most things in life......

I've got a couple of old Ulima bow saws with different width blades. The blade length is 580mm on them. I find them pretty good to use being so light.
They are tensioned with threaded metal bar and wing nut, but I think I might change it to a string as it would be easier to wind up especially with the wider blade,
 
rest assured mine is very rough and ready compared to Mike's masterpiece.

I do now have a rip chain for my chain saw and I do have a heavy maul and a splitting wedge.
 
I have a Gramercy bow saw, it was a gift some years ago, it has a 12" blade. I don't use it that often but it is very useful for some jobs.
