• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. I went to the carboot for the first time this year, I didn't do to bad.

The Rapier No43 is missing a fence rod and blade clamp but I can make them only £3.

The rules, files, and small screwdriver was £2

The tapered ream and Glibows was £2

The ebony square was £1

Britool spanner 50p.

The folding rule is a Chesterman No835 I haven't seen one of these before.

Don't these people know there's a worldwide revival in hand tool woodworking? What sort of crazy pricing strategy have they chosen?! :D

I'd be tempted to go out hunting myself if I didn't already have all of those... ;)
 
What do you guys do with all these tools though?

My brother used to trawl car boot sales for tools. He's bed bound now but he has a double width and double depth garage filled to a height of maybe 5 feet with boxes and boxes of tools. Multiple vices and god know how many spanners and stuff. and lots of welding gear. My father was the same and T my mother's house his old workshop and one of the garages is full of tools as well. Most of it Imperial I expect. Plus a ginormous metalworking lathe, some sort of powered hammer thing and huge grinding wheels & goodness knows what else.

If it goes for those sorts of prices, it's hardly worth sorting through it when I can finally persuade my brother and mother to get rid of it all.

I sharpen my own saws so the saw files will come in handy the tin snips are good for thin metal cutting.

You can’t by ebony so snooker queue and squares are a good source.

I am half way though making a clamp for the rapier plane.

I am collecting screwdrivers to fit all the screw gauges as I have loads of brass slotted screws.

I did find a pair of speakers for £10 that I sold for £775 at a car boot so it’s worth going.

I've always been able to buy Ebony in reasonable sizes at Yandles and I use to make a point of getting hold of a lump each time I went there. It's also still available in small sizes from Workshop Heaven.

Never been interested really in buying old tools at car boots, unless I'm looking for something specific like perhaps a decent jack plane that could be converted to one with a convex sole, but sometimes you do come across a gem that's simply too good to pass up. Unfortunately that's never happened :lol: - Rob
 
It took me about 5 years to find a 27 mm alen key then I found two on the same day, I only bought one.

Pete, I have to ask: what on earth do you have that 'needs' an Allen key that big?

I'm intrugued that you waited 5 years...suspicious thought: was this to complete....your collection :eusa-shhh:

My motorcycle front axle has sockets at each end of the shaft so I need two different sized Allen keys.
You can leave the pinch bolts tight on one side, it’s easer to rotate the speedo drive into the right place with two Allen keys.

Well the blade clamp is made, i hust need to make decent clamping bolt.

I ordered some 7mm silver steel for the replacement rod, but it turns out they are 8mm on the Rapier, you vould have warned me Andy :D 8mm now on order.

I made a double ended blade 3/6mm blade it works well and the unused sharp end dosn't stick up to much so its quite safe.

P.s. the clamp is taller than the Record one, they arend interchangable,
 
Just to be helpful, I've checked the rods on my Rapier and they're 5/16".

As that equates to 7.938 mm, I think you'll be ok ;)
 
I fixed a similar plane by using rods out of brass shot bolts that I skipdived. :)

I need a depth stop screw, unless I drill it out and fit a metric bolt.

Thanks to Andy its now complete, apart from the blade clamp bolt but that will have to wate untill I get the lathe out of the shed.

8mm silver steel eas a very good fit fro the replacement fence rod, a better fit than the orginal one!

Glad it fits ok.
That nice blade clamp looks like it has some sort of odd modern thread to it... Which does at least mean that you can find plenty of sorts of thumbscrew on eBay etc for not much cash, eg https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/354218650861
