• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I know just enough to be dangerous as they say, :)
We decided to improve the security around our house and have fitted two network CCTV cameras. My brother chose them and I just added to his order,
Hikvision 8mp EXIR turret cameras with H.265+ compression software.
My question for any experts is what DVR should I buy to work with them I would like one that provides POE for the 2 cameras. Ideally allowing remote access by phone. I have a switch so I can network my workshop into the main home network.
I dont want to spend a fortune either but my computer is objecting to the video from both cameras.
TIA

I don’t know about DVR’s as I’ve gone down the Ring route, but a PoE switch would be cheap then you’re not limiting yourself to the DVR having PoE ports and might widen your selection and lower the price.

Thanks Mark I have a POE (power over ethernet) injector hub at the moment, I thought the DVR with POE would be better, or rather save space.
I might actually have to do some research.

I'd get a Hikvision DVR for complete compatibility. Their DVR has POE on the ports.

I have 2 Hikvision cameras connected to the DVR and one running from a POE switch at a different location on my home network. The switch is gigabit and has 4 POE ports and 4 normal.

The DVR is set for full time recording and 15 frames a second at maximum resolution. A 4TB drive (I bought the DVR with no drive fitted) gives a little over 2 weeks recording before it overwrites the oldest. Various detection settings, view on my phone, easy to export clips to USB and so far (5 years) completely reliable.

I recently bought another camera from Amazon warehouse deals - bad idea. First thing you do with a new camera now is set a password.... and it came passworded. Only Hikvision can reset a password and they will only do it for the retailer not the customer. That is too difficult for amazon so it went back. Don't forget your passwords!

Oh and the nightvision is good but the IR doesn't carry that far so I have a IR floodlight in the garden and it makes a big difference. Your cameras being newer they may have improved the nightvision.

edit. Realised after I posted this the devices are known as NVR's not DVR - network video recorder not just Digital.

Looks OK. Been a while since I looked at NVRs.

A 4 channel unit can only take 4 cameras maximum. It will have 4 ports but you can connect cameras on your network and not use those ports..but it is still a maximum of 4 connected cameras.

I'd also update the firmware on cameras and NVR as it usually improves the system with new features and bug fixes.

Oh and like me you will come to hate spiders. They love IP cameras and especially the lens face where there is a trace of warmth from the IR nightvision.

Thanks Robert The NVR arrived I also ordered a survailence HDD 2TB which I was assured would be more than sufficient for my cameras as they have specific compression software which is also used in the recorder.
When setting up the cameras I activated the motion sensor which reduces the recording time.
I have run a network cable out to the workshop but I am not sure if I will ever use it.

My NVR has a drive broken out of a USB plug in case. Didn't expect it to last but still going strong and no errors. Thinking of changing it to a 6TB. 2TB seems small but then I wouldn't do motion only.

I'd suggest setting it to full time recording for a while and then compare the results to recording activity only. Unless it has improved a lot it will miss things. For example foxes on our lawn at night don't trigger motion detection until they get nearer the house but are clearly visible at distance. Plants swaying in the breeze will trigger motion detection so you record lots of nothing anyway.

Network cable to anywhere is always a good idea. I have one to the garden shed providing internet via an old router set to access point mode to the patio at the end of the garden.

Completely agree re the vagaries of motion detection. We have two outside...(potentially phenomenal range of 800m...checked it, it does !). One gives early warning of arriving vehicles and/or walkers in theory. That gets set off frequently by I know not what.

The second is at the back and there to give warning of any deer intent on eating the roses or trashing the raised beds. The alarm goes, I'm downstairs in a flash, 150W of LED light shows any up, freezers getting full. But last few nights, it's gone off and nothing there. Last night I discovered the 'culprit. Beautiful tawny owl perched on one of the posts looking bemused.

Thanks I appreciate your comments, this is my setup screen for motion detection. The red grids light up when activated, You click on them with the mouse and they turn off.

At first it was picking up dragon flies and everything else, I have adjusted the sensitivity downwards. It still picks up these little fellas.

It appears the front camera is picking up leaves blowing down the street so I will start adjusting that one now. It works quite well in the dark in daylight mode.

I have not mastered capturing images as yet so I took pictures of the tv with my phone.
