• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Clock - Done

Essex went on a French tour, once, sponsored by a champagne house. We had free champagne with dinner before we played the French national team, for breakfast, on the bus, when we got off the bus, at lunchtime, in the tea break..........we bloody nearly lost! Luckily one of our quick bowlers had Adrian's approach to champagne, so he was able to run in and bowl at full pace, and saved the game for us.

I had the surreal experience of wandering around the grounds of the Chateau where the match was staged, and falling asleep under a tree.......only to wake up and see a pack of wolves only 15 or 20 metres away from me, in the woods. Eventually, my head cleared enough to see the chainlink fence between us, but not before I'd ......erm......had a moment.
 
A bit of an in joke in our family between those of us one side of the channel who appreciate that just because Prosecco sparkles does not make it a champagne substitute and those who can’t taste the difference:eek:.
My rule of thumb - and there will be exceptions here - is that Prosecco tends to be sweeter, and a lot of Brits in particular prefer that.

My other rule of thumb is that the good Champagne starts at (UK prices, of course) around £50 a bottle, and below that, pound for pound, you can get a more palatable Prosecco than a Champagne - largely because the extra sugar hides a multitude of problems. Personally I'm of the view that if an occasion isn't worth spending for the good stuff then I just don't bother, but I know a lot of people will balk at that sort of money for a bottle and for them, they'll go for whatever's available at the price they're willing to pay. Everyone I know that's claimed to prefer Prosecco over Champagne is because they were comparing £25 bottles of each, and honestly in that situation I agree with them.
 
Yes, I think you have nailed it there Stephen. In the birthday party group the Bolly was a decent price in a case at about £42 each cost price I think and even with service and mark up is worth it. The Krug though was a 2011 vintage (for a special reason apparently) and that was somewhat over £350 a bottle at cost to me from my supplier. Plus mark up and service. Personally I would not pay that or anything like it to drink a bottle of wine. It's absolutely lovely but..... the law of diminishing returns. Non vintage Krug (pinot noir blend) is much cheaper of course, but still getting on for £180 a bottle wholesale. :oops:
 
:rolleyes: I just couldn't bring myself to spend £40 or £50 on a bottle of fizz. I could buy a really nice old plane for that and far more lasting pleasure.
Likewise a tenner or often less buys me a bottle of red I can enjoy over 2 or 3 days. I don't care what the brand is or anyone who says it's carp as long as I like it.
 
Majestic have a litle gem at the moment. It works very well with all sorts of cuisine from Asian to Indian. Owned by Bollinger and you can tell.

In my limited experience the sweetness of any Prosecco that I have drunk has put me off.
Just to prove my Inkscape success was not a fluke I created a clock face for Champagne.

Water slide transfers require sealing before soaking the transfer off the paper. Clear acrylic spray varnish is recommended.
I thought it a good idea to do a test run as the last time I used water slide transfers were on Airfix model planes 50 odd years ago.
I have never used acrylic spray varnish before either but reasoned the workshop would not be warm enough nor dust free enough for a quality finish so I spread some newspaper on the kitchen table and set to.
I was not at all prepared for the smell. :eek:

Extractor fan on full and windows flung open but the smell lingers and spreads to the rest of the house.

Does all acrylic varnish have a very strong smell?

I have been told in no uncertain terms that the next time I will be spraying in the garage.
 
Testing the two types of transfer has bought differing results. A scrap piece of birch ply was used for these trials.
Reading the instructions for the water slide would have helped.

These should not be applied to bare wood!

The heat transfer paper raises the grain of the bare wood and leaves a rough finish not visible in this image. The transfer is also very visible. I can’t imagine that if this was applied to a varnished service that the varnish would stand up well to the heat of the iron.

The problem with the E is a result of either uneven pressure or time under the very hot iron. These heat transfer papers, by all accounts, work best with a heat press.

A second try this morning with the waterslide, this time onto a spray varnished surface proved much more successful and with a coat or two of varnish on top will be the way to go. The transfer is also barely visible.

I quickly considered and dismissed cutting the letters out and applying them individually. Getting them evenly spaced would be a nightmare. The advantage with applying the whole transfer is the wood is a perfect circle, the transfer is a perfect circle, the wood has a hole in the middle for the mechanism and the transfer has a small dot in the middle which when positioned over the hole allows the transfer to be placed exactly in the middle.

Mechanism arrives at the weekend.
 
I thought it would be a good idea to build in a sobriety test so I deliberately offset the face by a few mms..;)if you can see it is not centred than you can crack open a bottle.

The water slide transfer, provided the instructions are followed, work well.
I would like to find a low odour acrylic varnish. The one I have stinks to high heaven.
Many thanks to Dr Al. Without his Inkscape tutorial I would not have got this far and for pointing me towards the automatic radio controlled movement. It is good fun to watch the hands spin round and settle on the right time. It seems to pick up the Uk time signal rather than European but I’m fine with that as it will end up over there in a weeks time anyway.

Nice little project this, the clock does not have a pointer to when Prosecco time actually is so assume it any time you want or have I missed something?

Yep, that's the idea. I surreptitiously tested this out over the festive period and was informed that mimosas for breakfast are not an unusual occurrence. So any time of day is neither too early nor too late for them to open a bottle. I am sure they will enjoy the joke.

I was informed by my son and his partner over Christmas that mimosas are now to be a compulsory part of breakfasts on CD and BD. Extra prosecco required for next year methinks - Rob
