• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I struggle with the heat but certainly could not handle that cold! (worse than brass monkey)

That's the wind chill readings.

-51°F is -46°C. Remember the scales converge at -40°, below that, the values in F are lower than in C.
 
In currently in Lapland with the family and it's been between -3 & -14 all week. My mate had -25 last week and is mocking me for being a wuss having not experienced the real cold!

Off to see Santa in 30 mins then the KP scale says a strong chance of aurora sightings at 11pm-2am so me and mate will be off aurora hunting and the wives will be in the warm with the kids.

Enjoy the visit and the northern light show, Mark. It was going to be clear here tonight, we might see them but I think it'll be overcast.
 
Ooooh....that's cold, Dave. We could do with a bit of cold instead of this damp dreary non-winter weather.
 
Just seen the latest forecast for next week - your cold weather is tweaking the Jet stream, bringing us gales and storms!!

Sadly our aurora sighting was a bit of a letdown. KP was supposed to be 3+ but didn't get much above 2 and mostly around 1.6-1.9. We did definitely see some but nothing like what is possible.

One chap had an SLR set up on the frozen lake (the best local viewing point) with a long exposure so they show better what we could have seen but light pollution from 2 very small lights along the path side 40 feet away meant over exposure.

This is the kind of thing we saw with the naked eye. Obviously a bit brighter than this but you get the gist, the swirls and vertical drapes of light.

That's sad - I know of several people who've been to Iceland and on airplane chasing flights who've had no success - it's very much hit or miss.
I've also read that the fantastic photos shown of it are generally time lapsed and compilation shots.
Actual sightings are not as good as made out.

Hi Dave, sadly not, that was the only night we had with clear skies and a KP above 0.7 and we're back home now. Maybe next year...

Rod we did wonder whether that was the case but I have seen some good footage from aeroplanes when they chased the lights for Stargazing Live on the BBC.

I can at least say I have seen them with my own eyes even if they weren't what they could have been.

Not even remotely in the same league but took this on our way to Yorkshire on Sunday - there was about a dozen of them moving very slowly as very little wind
