• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I’m just starting to build a garden room for the GLW, I’m at the footing stage at the mo so thinking of running cables in which got me thinking about tinternet .
The garden room will be around 25m from the router box in the house & whilst it’s not impossible to run a cable from one to the other I was wondering if there were other options, whatever I do I need to end up with a wireless signal as we both only have IPads .
Any suggestions on achieving this gratefully received.

Forget trying to get wi-fi there as too many things can go wrong meaning that you will get frustrated and annoyed trying to get stuff to work.

Put in an ethernet cable. That gives you future-proofing because :

(a) guarantees you will get an internet connection there

b) gives you the option to add a wireless access point on the end and that will then mean you can have all sorts of exciting things such as wifi in the garden.

Think about a cheap small ducting and run a pull-through and mains as well as the ethernet.

Just don't have a wife that changes her mind every day re room usage thus ending up with the router in the wrong place to connect the ethernet cable into. DAMHIKT.

And if it's too much faff to get an ethernet all the way there, then get it as close as you can then there are outdoor Wi-Fi AP's (Access Points) you can get which would then give you connectivity in the garden and the building.

I use one to extend my Wi-Fi out to the front gate for my Ring doorbell and it work beautifully for both the doorbell and garden connectivity. Mine works on PoE (power over Ethernet) meaning you don't need separate power source, again if that makes things easier.

Ideally you'd go whole hog and have a duct with all the required services in, but at a minimum this will do you.

Happy to share more details if you want to message me separately.

I think we might need a sticky for this, Mark :D

I agree with suggestions about getting a network cable there but :

You can also get directional WiFi aerials to connect to your access point if it has the right sort of aerial connector or to connect at the computer end with a box to convert it to something that can connect to the computer. You could always add a wired repeater in the house with a dedicated directional aerial pointed at the garden room.

Do you have any links to any of those with a directional aerial, please ?

A large metal tray of the oposite side of the router will reflect the signal, we usrd to do that so the wife could watch tennis at the bottom of the garden.
I have since pressed into service a second wifi router.

I have this setup:

SIM router upstairs in my office at the front of the house, collectig the 3/4G signal and pinging it out as WiFi. This is by far the slowest part of the system.

WiFi AP in the conservatory far corner. These two boxes could not be further apart in the house, but getting a physical cable from one to the other posed more logistical problems than I was prepared to deal with.

Signal then goes down the garden by ethernet cable, laid at the same time that we laid for 240V and water.

AP in the workshop by the front door which pings out another WiFi signal. I have the SSID broadcast switched off so that no-one else can see it and do nefarious things on my network.

My understanding is that it is not a duplex signal, but even so I can watch YouTube in there without buffering.

It took a bit of setting up with that middle box. I couldn't get it to work acording to the instructions. I think it was supposed to be a Bridge*. Or possibly a Repeater*, I can't remember. But when I set it as an Access Point*, it all started to work.

*I have no idea which is which, but one of them is working.

My Son did some none-scientific experiments with wifi out doors and found that he could get 60m range from a normal router but he also found that the bits/distance graph was not a straight slope. After some distance it started to drop off say from 30Mbps to 1Mbps and then ran a straight line for a long distance at the pathetic level before dropping out completely. Also it needed to be a clear line of sight at any significant distance. His conclusion was you can get the signal to 30M plus but you really do not want to if there is a choice.
