We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. Found This Piece, (yes), At The Dump

Managed a couple hours tonight and sorted out the material for the top. I ripped five lenghts of Birdseye Maple on the table saw and finished the sides with a handplane ready for gluing.8144.jpg8145.jpg8146.jpg
 
Up early this morning , 4 am., cup of tea then headed to the woodshop. Removed the clamps and started to hog off material to tame the twisty top. One surface is done the other needs work. Good to have an electric hand plane. 8147.jpg8148.jpg8149.jpg
 
Belt sanding the top, started at a 80 to 100 to 120. Then hand sanding finishing with card scraping. Had to do a repair which worked out well.8157.jpg8160.jpg

Done and dusted, I have réservations about the finished piece. The top is to thick for the base. Options are A make a thiner top for the base. B use the top for a through mortise and tenon bench. Or C don't look at it for a few days then plan the next step.
Good takeaways are that I now know what it is to be done to remove four layers of paint.

No Scott- it is perfect.
Knowingly or otherwise what you have done is absolutely ' on trend ' and if you put it for sale it would be gone in a flash. I would leave it alone as it currently has appeal to a wide demographic.
Attachment syndrome aside you could easily make a tidy profit!

How about a chamfer all round the underside of the top, that will give the illusion of a thinner one, also lift it down to user height on the floor and it won’t be nearly so noticeable.

I only have a 1/4" to do a bottom edge chamfer, this could work. Once in situ with books or crap on top of it the chunkiness won't be noticed?

Another week is almost over and despite the lovely sunshine I have managed to catch a few hours in the workshop. I'd better post some more photos before I forget what they are of.

I left you with some attempted repairs to flaws on the insides of the legs. I think they will be ok, but I seem to have omitted to take detailed 'after' photos. If anything looks too bad, I can cut some fresh legs and start over. Here's the story so far, with the best sides outwards.

I needed to decide how much the top would overhang the frame, in order to cut the rails to length. So here are...

How thick is that top Scott? Am I correct in thinking that the top only overhangs by 1/4” hmmm I’m now thinking maybe a 1/4” rebate underneath the top cut all around back to the frame size and stain the vertical section of the rebate so that it looks to be part of the underframe?
Not convinced about the look of the chamfers I’m afraid.

Edit please ignore all of the above, I’ve gone back to your photos and it looks smashing as it is.
 
The 45 deg on the mock up is too large, tomorrow I will do one with a 1/4" chamfer.
:unsure: the wife would say stop pissing around with it and get on with something that needs doing.
