• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Anyone seen this type of gaye hinge? In-laws drive gate appears to have dropped and won't close20240826_133613.jpg
I'm guessing that either of these two screws might draw the top into the post

Any ideas anyone.
I'll have to come back with Allen keys as my boot full of tools for other jobs of course is missing the right tool.
TIA

How far away from them are you ? Is the gate liftable enough to clear the black bit ? If liftable, what moves as it's lifted? Gate being brought back to square or the post to vertical?

Assuming all highlighted by the squiggly yellow is 'gate' then what is the gap between gate and post as in your photo doesn't look very much.

Bottom line ...what can move to make this happen

1) Ground heave where the black bit is

2) Gate itself losing integrity and drooping out of square - solution adjust as you suggest assuming enough gap or lever gate up and fix wood to keep it square...cheap and ugly

3) Gate post sagged. Small excavation on the gate side, hardwood wedge driven home to get post upright

Thanks Rog,
The yellow squigly bit is indeed all gate. The gap between gate and post is not a lot with a rubbery flexible “seal”.
The post is rock solid and tested perfectly upright on both sides.
it is a combination metal and plastic gate 3\4, 1\4. It is the 1\4 side that catches on black plastic stop. The gate cannot be lifted, well not by me.
I was horrified when we found out they bought this gate, not the best quality. I’ve a pair of quite large double wooden gates that expand and contract with the seasons. Very easy to adjust by winding in or out the top hinge bolt into the posts.
I’ve tried a google image search of that top hinge without success. I will pay a visit to the people who supplied and fitted it and ask them about adjustment and come back with Allen keys another day.

One assumption is that the concrete post was put in vertical. If it wasn’t and leaned away from the vertical but now is vertical …that would explain things. Reason why you can’t move the post is because it’s been put in…as you’d expect…with a bloody great ball of concrete which ground heave has shifted. So suggestion 3 won’t work.

Remove gate. Angle grind some off the bottom?

What’s happening at the bottom hinge ? Any chance of leveraging that?

Have you tried lifting the end of the gate with a long lever or a car jack. This would let you know if there is any play at the base of the post. If as you suspect the screws are for adjustment then lifting the end of the gate will make adjustment easier.

I’ve had to leave it for now. There is no security risk with leaving it open and it is secured in the fully opened position so not flapping around.
I will go back next week with suitable allen keys and I will take a lever of some sort. Still not found a similar example on t’interweb so will visit the showroom beforehand too.

Angle grinder really will be a very last resort.

Is the gate square if not it has sagged as Roger has mentioned, if so than probably running a cable from top hinge side to the bottom right can bring it square. If your ok with that look.

FWIW I identified the type of top hinge. No idea what it’s called in english. I am not at all sure exactly what each of the two screws adjust but with the right size Allen key I should be able to raise the gate enough.

I think the Allen key in the part that fixes to the post is the one you are after and it is the amount it is proud that determines the gate angle. screw it in then tighten up the Allen key in the bit that pivots the gate
