We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. As I am currently battling with Coronavirus and have been looking for a used hand plane for some time. As has been mentioned else where the prices are crazy. So I have decided I am going to buy myself a new one.
I would like to use it in a shooting board and for general use.
After buying the Rider block plane I decided I would ask for reccomendations first.
Try to keep the prices realistic please
 
I'd still be heading towards a second hand one, even if the prices are currently silly. If you really, really don't want to do that, I reckon that Quangsheng might be the way to go.

I didn't know you were ill. Sorry to hear that, and I hope you get well soon, Michael. Just watch out for a series of false dawns, especially around day 8 to 10. You think you're better, and then get walloped again.
 
You’ll get a mixture of answers on this question, but generally everyone will suggest a No 04 or 05 hand plane or their slightly wider counterparts as a general “user” (Unless you’re Alan Peters!). A lot of it is down to personal preference which is hard to get without having a hands-on feel for the tools, which is hard to get without the tools :lol:

I personally prefer a No 04 for pretty much everything but I rarely use hand planes to any great degree.

What kind of budget are you working with?
 
Thanks Mike I am on day five at the moment sats are OK I just hope to stay out of hospital.
I bought a number 5 from an auction site and had fun restoring it unfortunately it is not quite true. My friend with the big mill is not avaiable to true it up for me.
Workshop Heaven had a no 5 Quansheng at a reasonable price and at least it will be true of course it is out of stock now.

I'm curious as to how bad that actually is that you'd need to mill it true, has it got a bad twist along the sole? :eusa-think:
 
I have no doubt if I had the time or energy I could make the sides true to the base but it is much easier to get someone with a mill to sort it in 10 mins.

Novocaine when I am feeling better I will take some pictures I like the idea of having a plane that is sorted without any work from me the ToolTique one is fully restored and is ready for use.

I like the Quangsheng one but it is out of stock now.
 
Michael do you have a preference on what size you want? I think I might have a Stanley no 5 in a box in the workshop. In good nick if memory serves but I don’t really need it as I have a well tuned 5 1/2.

I can have a look tomorrow if you might be interested.

Sorry to hear, when your feeling a bit better—- I agree with Dan, a number 4 does it for me every time, in fact the only plane I ever really use. I wanted one to take to a friend in America as they are crazy money over there, and toured all the local secondhand/pawnshops and picked up a reasonably old number four, it had a brass adjusting wheel, unbroken handle and it didn’t need much fettling to get it right I think it was £8. Ian
 
Michael I have an Acorn ( or Rapier?) No 4 and a Record 51/2 somewhere in my garage.
You can have them for the price of delivery.
They are in reasonable condition but may need sharpening.
The 5 has a serrated sole.
