HD TV

Bought a secondhand HDTV for the rental place. I've never used one before but when you Autotune one of these sets, do you have to choose a time when BBC is broadcasting HD (I believe that HD is only broadcast at certain times of the day) ?

I checked the set out in the afternoon but no BBC HD on 101 - forgot to check the commercial channels. According to the Freeview website I should get HD channels where we are. But I guess having said that the numpty who was here before could well be pointing the aerial at some tiny non-HD repeater.

A freeview HD tuner is different to an ordinary freeview tuner that only does standard definition.

So the first question is does the TV have a freeview HD tuner? Just because the TV is called 'HD' doesn't mean it can receive freeview in HD.

HD channels are broadcast full time.

I would think that if you get a signal, you should get HD...I think the HD channels broadcast 24/7...showing a splash screen when there's no content.

We get ours through an aerial. How's the signal strength...does it show on your tele...60-70% is best...you don't want it too strong, as it'll crash/ freeze the software. In such a case you pop a £2 variable atenuator on your coax plug before the TV input.

It's a Sony KDL-32D3000 which is fully HD, I believe.

Will check out the signal level and quality.

The 24/7 confirmation is very helpful, thanks.

That TV has a DVB-T tuner not a DVB-T2 so it cannot receive HD signals.

Oh pants. I looked at this review http://www.techradar.com/reviews/audio- ... 398/review but admittedly only the first couple of pages and there was no indication as far as I could see re this limitation.

If you were keen to watch HD Roger you could watch it via a box into the hdmi input.

Yup..not all bad as I have a Humax YouView that has HD. But never used HDMI before and I read about issues etc. SCART for me everytime

No, not security. Lot of threads regarding the YouView box throwing a wobbly and it was down to the HDMI. Since I know SFA about HDMI and Murphy is alive and well and living in the cellar alongside his brother Sod.........say no more.

Ah, k, fair do's. Still means your HD box is pointless though as SCART won't pass the signal to the TV in HD, so you have an HD capable receiver and screen and SD cable between them…

LOL....our geriatric plasma screen still produces great pictures albeit SD but it is SCART. As are all our other bits of video kit with the exception of the Humax YouView which also has HDMI.

So we'll take the Humax down with the secondhand set I referred to in the OP. TBH I'm not that fussed if I can't get HD. What you've never had, you can never miss! And as things stand if it wasn't for LOML wanting a bit of R&R in the evening to provide some respite from the rigours of the day then I doubt I'd be bothering to watch any TV. Simply too much to do.
