• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I often have to adapt boxes for items I have made and use a hot glue gun for this, I am also about to start playing with resin and paln to use polypropylene and hot glue to make the forms.
My question is which sticks are best or is hot glue just hot glue?

There are ones with different open times and of course different diameter for different guns.
Not sure if there are any differences in the ultimate strength though.
My main application is for tacking wires in place and high voltage insulation of joints and terminals so not really put it to the test for strength.
I've sticks bought at different times that are white and yellow - not notice much difference really.

I think a type that does not produce long stringy threads would be an advantage in nearly all applications.

I use Bison glue sticks, I use hot melt to stick wood to my router sled granite tile base. It's never let me down.
But if youre after maximum strength, you need to wait till its actually runny before applying. If its just soft it does not have any where near the strength.

Agree about the threads, another good thing you can use it for is waterproofing outdoor connections – chocolate block type for fairy lights etc.

Thanks for all of the information. It turns out my gun is 11mm which glue guns direct dont appear to stock and I think 5 kg of glue sticks may be a little too much for me :)

The clear sticks are good for temporarily gluing stuff when wood turning. After use it can often just be peeled off. I’ve got some white sticks but no idea what they’re for. You can get yellow and grey ones as well.

I'll measure my sticks tomorrow as I've got a stash.

I’ve used a HGG since they first came out yonks ago (early 80’s I believe) and I still have the much encrusted gun I ‘acquired’ from school at the time. I use the standard sticks ‘ordinaire’ which are the stringy ones but which do offer a very good bond.

Worth noting is that hot glue is just about the only thing that will bond plastic (polythene etc) The last thing I used it for was to stick some plastic ‘bumpers’ to the underside of my loo seat when everything else has failed - Rob

If standard sticks are ok they seem easy enough to get e.g. Amazon have packs of 40 at 11mm x 150mm for £6.99 and next day del if you have prime. That seems a reasonable price. https://www.amazon.co.uk/DDSTG-Sticks-1 ... 9662&psc=1
Like Roger I have a stash I bought years ago but can't remember what size they are, I have a Bosch gun btw which is excellent.

Thanks, I bought the glue from lidl no doubt it is a special size. Lons I think you are right standard size ones will be best for me at this time, thanks for the amazon link i will order them.
