• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

i’ve been asked to make something

Phil, that is an interesting idea. One that I am sure I am not ready for though. Having a 14 long gouge spinning around while I manoeuvre the timber towards and across it sound scary, even for halloween. I only have a wood lathe remember.

Your final sentiment is one a whole heartedly agree with. There is just as much enjoyment in working out how to do something than there is in achieving it. Sharing the project on here is also a means to end as I cannot give up now.
I do have a cunning plan that I will keep to myself for now, just in case it all goes wrong, but will please Alf I think.

Probably next weekend before I can start creating sawdust.

Andy if you give me the sizes you need and let me know if you'll use a bearing cutter or a guide and it's offset i could run them off for you on the CNC on some thin ply and send them out if can cover carriage.

Alan,
Thank you. That is a very kind. I appreciate that a lot. Can I park your offer until i have tried an alternative? Me and the router, especially handheld, have never really seen eye to eye. Too noisy, too fast and all to easy to çock things up, big time.
I hope to bash out something next weekend. Success or failure I will share the result here.

You're going to include a pen holder? :eusa-dance:

No stop it. I have enough to do already. :)

A bit late waking up on this thread

Andy, why complicate life, just go the Forstner route.

Good investment in the Forstners. 8-)

If you were closer I would drill the holes for you. (you can always courier the timber  )
My range starts at 50mm going down to 10mm
(cost me plenty ZAR)

Alan,
I am reluctant for you to spend any time on this until I have tried all other options. The router would be my plan C. Another problem with the template method is securing it to what will be a relative narrow piece of wood. It is already BTW.
I have found a source for one of the drill bit sizes that I do not have. Which just leaves the 29,37 & 39mm recesses which I think I have found a solution for.

Andy if you're still over here then when I was in Lidl the other day they were selling an adjustable holesaw for £7.99 that would cover all your size needs. Might not be the best quality but for that price buy a couple.

Id have a go at it. :D even gives a nice hile in thw moddle for dust removal.

A qucik tidy uo of the bottom with a bearing guided router obviously.

Had one decades ago; horribly, horribly inaccurate; they look good but the thing's ghastly. I got rid of mine very quickly - Rob

Never had an issue with it. Cant say it gets used a whole lot but has proven useful a few times.

But they're not all the same! There were plenty of different designs and makers. And it's not like Andy's boring deep holes in hard wood.

Definitely worth a try if you have a proper old one, but I don't expect the modern Silverline or similar offerings would be up to much.

I did have a good one Andy, a nice, shiny brand new, made in Sheffield, Record thing in a blue box (as I recollect) bought in the early 70's and it was still bloody horrible  - Rob

I'm both amazed and grateful for the level of interest in what on the face of it appeared to be such a simple project.
I am going to proceed thus. Using my already available selection of wood bits, forstner bits, augers and metal bits I will make through holes in a slice taken from the apple wood. I expect a few rough edges which will be cleaned up with sandpaper. Much easier to clean a through hole than a recess.
I have ordered one new forstner bit, 23mm and a rather fancy looking but I expect well made hole cutter (not the Lidl one) for the 3 larger holes

I've never been disappointed with anything I have bought from finetools.com in Germany and I expect this to do this job and be capable of many others in the future.

Not cheap but Alf gave me permission. ;)

And as we know, all the best projects need a new tool.

The slice will then be glued back

With any luck I can do some test holes at the weekend.

If what I end up with is a complete dog's dinner than I will take up Droog's generous offer of a bespoke router template.

Mmmmmmmmmmm nice Star M tool, fantastic quality from a very respsected Japanese tool Maker. i have some of their augers, top quality

I fully approve - a new tool, and ticking the gizmocity box. Well played. :eusa-clap:

Just awaiting design approval now.

The ones on the wood are metric, those that are just drawn, imperial.

By all means tell me what you prefer but the final decision will not be mine

I prefer the first 'in line' design but I'd move the biggest hole in a bit from the end; looks a mite close as is - Rob

Same here - definitely the in line one, but I'd make the spacing to the edge the same as the spacing between the cutouts.

Stephen, Rob,
yes of course the spacing will be a lot more even. Those bits of paper are not stuck, just there for visualisation purposes as I struggle with CAD.

Phil, I appreciate your effort. I like it and was one I suggested while there, thinking I could maybe do a lazy Susan type thing but when we mocked up a spiral design using a tea plate the feeling was it took up too much space, sideways, on the worktop.
That piece of wood in the image is 2.25" wide by either 10 (for the inline version) or 8 and a bit" for the alternative.
