• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Is it me, or is it very quiet in here?

Couple of people on holidays but other than that I don't know.

We do only have a relatively small (regularly) contributing population so it only takes a couple to be out or busy and it goes quiet.

You and I will just have to up our game in the absence Terry! [emoji6]

Nowt much happening this end other than dodging showers and doing the prep work for the plasterer to come. Trying to plasterboard old wonky roof lines and fitting nicely round an existing Velux would test the patience of Job.

John (the plasterer) arrives Thursday and our first job is to build three scaffold towers and manhandle two staging boards between them (6m and 5m). What ? With my bad back? Haven't worked out quite how we are going to get them up yet. At least, I've protected the old stone surrounds and stone steps to make them John-proof.
 
I'm busy rebuilding my storage shed - in between the showers ( and the forecast is not looking promising!!)

Foundation/Retaining Walls and existing garden wall extension built.
Itching to start using some wood!

As I am living proof that empty vessels make the most noise I apologise for my lack of drivel over the summer and especially this weekend.
Summer is full on child minding so very little time in the workshop. And this weekend was spent ferrying my brother around after he had the good fortune of his car breaking down on a garage forecourt. He also suffered the embarrassing misfortune of driving 14 miles on a near full tank of petrol in his Toyota Avensis 2.4D (for Diesel). After spending an agonising weekend not knowing quite how much damage was done to the car we collected it yesterday. Damage? One fuel filter. Cost €235 or about £170 quid. 70€ (£50) went on a full tank of diesel, add a couple of hours labour and methinks he got away lightly, especially after reading some of the horror stories on line of people being charge 000s in similar circumstances.
 
I've been building cupboards and drawers to reorganise my workshop after the house extension took away one corner. Shuttering ply and MDF so nothing special. Maybe I'll take some pictures when I've tidied up :)
 
I have been working away from home for a couple of weeks and then also not home every weekend and then when at home sitting at the laptop working.

Will now be at home for 6 weeks and not able to do much as the right foot will be out of action. Toe pinned and screwed to get the alignment sorted out. (I broke it! :oops: )

I seem to be a bit quiet with work at the moment - although I'm ticking over and just finishing off a small project which I'll post on here when it's finished. I attended another interesting lead yesterday morning, so I will be back on the drawing board at some point during the week. The feature stair project (you may have seen in another post) is still going forward and I've spent over 40 hours during the last month or so preparing various designs and prices. I'm 99% sure they're going to go with one of them and a decision is getting very close - but it's hard to tell sometimes.

I've also just started ongoing advertising with the Dorset Life Magazine which is my first real advertising in 4 years. It's an excellent magazine and although it's early days, I'm quietly excited about it.

Things could be getting very busy indeed with some interesting commissions. 8-)

Tree above is a real pain - fighting with dropping leaves and berries but I want to retain it.

Yes, after laying it I realised I should have let mine rest for longer. Fingers crossed the rain will hold off!

Tree looks very nice, so can see exactly why you want to keep it there.

Forgot to add - the tree has evil thorns - common name "Cockspur Thorn" some sort of Cratageous?

Looks to be a tricky job - have to make sure the branch almost on the roof edge doesn't rub a hole in the wind. Are the thorns big enough to pierce the EPDM if a branch touches it?

Well I've been quiet as I've been on holiday. Back now but a whole pile of motor related, non woodworking jobs are next on the list before I get back to bookcase mode.

This afternoon I needed to convert a 3 phase coolant pump from a milling machine to run on single phase.
A fortuitous combination of a low power motor (1/40) hp needing only small capacitors and a relatively large terminal box meant the phase converter could be built inside the terminal box quite neatly.



I found it a very satisfying result.


Well it keeps me off the streets eh? :lol:

Roof now stuck down - took about 3hrs as two up-stands slowed things down a bit.
Need some shorter trim which should arrive tomorrow.
Had a bit of a cock-up in the morning . Trimmed it roughly to size then pulled one end to remove a crease thinking the weight of it would keep it in place.
No way - it moved and took about an hour to get it back in place again!
The application of the main water based glue went well but using the contact adhesive for the edges and up stands caused a few bubbles - the spiky tree didn't help!

Steve - The lowest branch is propped up with some planking which I will improve later.

PS I bought the adhesive according to the suppliers recommendations - more than half left in the tins!!
Anybody local with an EPDM project, more than welcome to it?

A week last Friday my dog started passing blood and was rushed to the vet. A week ago the vet rang to say they had done all they could for her; I told them to continue treatment even though all hope had gone. Today I collected her and a pharmacy of medication. She's well along the road to recovery and the vet has described her recovery as a miracle.

Quiet? Not over here :) :) :)

Do you still have the stealth backup for her?

Our white fluff ball Iona, had a knee operation at Easter, she is much more mobile now but the fur has still not grown back to match the other leg.
 
I laid the suspended floor over the weekend and started on the outer skin using the old shed's panels. The old sides were much shorter so had to extend them somewhat.
