• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Just finished this poor interpretation of a Japanese box or cabinet thingie by Suda Kenji; one of his masterpieces can be seen in the V&A:

This interpretation in Bog Oak veneers with Satinwood end panels and the same material as inserts in the plinth mitre joints.

Brusso hinges from Classic Hand Tool laid on the back surface as in the original

The box opens sideways to reveal the drawers....

That is really stunning - I like that a lot! Until the last but one pic I thought is was quite small, but it is a significant piece that needs to be open to display your skills!

'Drawers made from Ian's excellent Victorian mahogany, finished with Lemon Oil. Fronts in Birds Eye Maple with African Blackwood pulls. The marine brass hasp took a day to polish with some of SWIMBO's diamond grits and a felt bob in a Dremmel. Big shout out to Harvey of this parish who sent me some M4 domed brass nuts. This thing caused more that a bit of consternation and nearly went through the bandsaw on more than one occasion so I got pretty fed up and fully intended to sell it; however yesterday SWIMBO liked it and subsequently claimed it has her own, to be filled up with Japanese 'treasures' in due course'

Plant-on drawer faces aren't your normal style, Rob. Why that choice?

Yes that is the only thing that I could find that wasn’t quite right (to my eye) on an absolutely superb piece! Also just curious about the drawer bottoms, seem to be made from thin slats. Suspect you are copying the original?
I am so glad that you are using that Mahogany Rob, and making such a good use of it.

I've used a 'planted' drawer front on many pieces Mike and it's done when the drawer is constructed with a central runner so the sides can have greater clearance than normal; as the fronts are glued on, they can be made to fit more closely. The upshot is that although the drawers are a lot more complex to make, they're much easier to fit to the opening.

The mahogany is superb stuff to use and much better than the modern equivalent...still got loads left! Drawer bottoms are a pair of 6mm thick bits of mahogany offered into grooves and slot screwed into place:

I numbered each one with Roman numerals cut with a 3mm chisel - Rob

Ah yes I see now, I think I would have been tempted to have the grain going the other way, I know it’s traditional to have it going across but it has always made more sense to have it front to back to me.

Fine work as usual from you and a good use of the excellent wood. The box looks as if it should have a handle to me. And would lend itself to a hidden compartment.

If you happen to have Suda Kenji's rather excellent book (I do) you'll note that none (if memory serves) of his pieces have a handle, so this one doesn't either. Furthermore, how do know my interpretation hasn't got a secret compartment, huh? 😁 - Rob

Edit - if I told you, it wouldn't be secret!

Your spare room is beginning to look like a special corner of the V&A! You've really done the materials justice with the quality of the fit and finish. I'd be scared to use it!

Thanks Andy. Now that SWIMBO has decided to purloin it, she's moved it onto her English Walnut chest of drawers:

...that I made for her a few years ago, so the last thing I had to do was to fit some small Alcantara feet on the underside of each plinth - Rob

Edit - it's already got a few 'treasures' in it!
