• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

As many of you know I'm quite an active person and play a lot of football, golf, cricket (badly) and cycling as well as having just signed back up to a local 'proper' gym to work on my strength. A few weeks ago I was working in the garden and came to the sudden realisation that I was as weak as a kitten compared to how I was 20-30 years ago, and while I know that's to be expected I figured I should start amending that a bit before I hit 50 (in 13 months time...).

I adore playing football, but I am not the most naturally gifted player, more like one of those players who makes a solid career out of being decent (far from great, or even good) but working harder than everyone else to make up the difference. The problem I've found recently (past 2-3 years) is that my body is getting injured far more easily, and taking longer to recover, so I finally resigned myself to retiring from Sunday league football and just carrying on with my casual 8 a side matches on Monday/Wednesday.

An unexpected meeting with an old friend at a Manchester Storm match in January then reignited a long smouldering flame in me, so I've swapped football for a new hobby, which I've been doing with my son Barney for the past 4 months and we're just about to sign on to a team together...

Here's me sporting my number 17, Steve Hanson, Charlestown Chiefs kit, for anyone who's ever watched the 1977 Paul Newman classic, Slap Shot! 🤣

Here's a few more pics of myself and Barney (he's just 15 and 6'1" tall, with a mountain of curly hair) in our matching jerseys, he has number 18, Jeff Hanson.

So far, so not so injured, but now we're getting into regular 1h scrim sessions, against people MUCH more experienced than us, it's getting harder and faster so let's see how that works out...!

So far, so loving it though, and it's great to have a sport I can do with my son where we're both able to compete at the same level. I'm sure he'll improve a good bit faster than I though. He's already laughing at how comparatively slow I am next to him, to which I have to explain that I'll be going slower until I'm more comfortable at the faster speeds because when I bounce on the ice, it's a lot harder than when he does!

Excellent Dad/Son time, but I still think You. Are. Both. Just. Mad.
Enjoy!
:)
S
PS Although I do think you are crazy to do this, I am just a teeny bit envious. I've never had Dad time with anyone and it's a bit late to start now. Sigh.

You've been out in the sun too long Mark! 😁
Just remember: "Never hesitate, just go for it!" (Otherwise the other fella hands out the punishment).

Signed by an ex second row forward....

Cool!:)

I watched our local team, Caen Drakkars who are semi pros, play last year . Great atmosphere, great spectacle but so fast it was hard for a newbie to follow.
Hope you can stay injury free.

As a young lad I used to watch Solihull Barons with a school teacher, the first couple of times she took me I hardly saw the puck it traveled so fast but eventually I got into it & really enjoyed watching though it seemed to me the priority was to get your retaliation in first 😂
It’s great being able to share a sport with your son, my younger lad has just taken up golf, he’s 23 & asked if I’d join him for a few rounds, my clubs must be at least 35 years old & hadn’t been used for the last 30 but it’s been great fun accompanying him, though I can’t believe how much I ached after the first few rounds though a 73 last week made the aches all worthwhile.

Mmm…so you’re swapping a sport where a load of guys run after a squishy ball on a firm non-slippable surface for a load of guys armed with hard sticks trying to hit you or a hard lump of wood aimed in your direction on a slippery surface and wearing footwear with sharp cutting edges?

And you’re trying to avoid injury?

Just remember your bones get more brittle with age and injuries tend to take longer to heal, woodworking is safer as you are in control and no one is going to wack you with a stick.

Good for you. I can't skate at all so I am a bit envious. Fully agree about how strength diminishes when I look back at my rowing days and how much power I could generate. Pathetic now. Especially after I decided to slim down a lot.

Dad/son time is precious. 100% behind that. When mine was little (4 ish) we introduced "boy's day out" with no wimmin allowed. We kept that up very regularly until he became a man (he's 28 now). Carting, flying, fishing, shooting, track driving, trail biking (motorbikes). Movies (lots). Brilliant. Just spent a week staying with him in Netherlands.

73!!?? That's bordering Pro level mate!!! Impressive!

Haha, well when you put it that way... 🤣

I don't know, my lathe, router table and tablesaw have all launched things at me at great speed in the past...! 🤣

Yep fully agree. I also do the same with my daughter, whatever she wants, but a lot of the time she likes the same things I do with Barney. Ice Hockey definitely not one of those things though!

My parents divorced when I was about 4 and sis was 1, and while we saw him every other weekend up until about 15yo it wasn't the same and I want to make sure my kids get as much of my time as possible, just doing stuff we enjoy.

Ooh yes Slap Shot, somewhat of a cult following over here. I view this film every year, brings back memories of my playing days. My wife likes to watch it with me just to see my reaction as I reminisce the past.
