• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I go out a couple of times a week with a group of other older cyclists, we normally ride between 20 and 30 miles on any given day at an average of around 10 mph. I did 38 miles a few weeks ago, out by myself, checking out a new route for our group, I averaged 12mph. We have ridden past Mikes house a number of times and some of the group are following the rebuild with a certain amount of disbelief at the disappearance of the front wall.

Under the influence of large son called Joe I have signed up for the London to Southend bike ride this Sunday.
The 65 mile route is go to be a bit of a challenge, which I hope to complete in a round 5 hours
They have the British Heart Foundation as the charity that is benefiting from this event, I wondered if any of you might have a pound or two that you add to my sponsor total?
I have a Just Giving page set up here.

Done. Well done mate and enjoy the ride. Check in when you've finished and let us know how you did, or better still get yourself set up on Strava and record the ride for us. :eusa-clap: :eusa-dance:

:text-bravo:

Cheers
Mark

I currently track my rides in Garmin Connect, I am not sure if I can share that with you lot, I will have a look.

Thanks for the sponsorship chaps. [emoji122]

So just sorted the bike out ready for the morning.

Tyres topped up to 85 psi, makes for a harder ride but it rolls quicker.

And something to wash them down.

Bike in the back of my Volvo, it's a 4:30 start, drive 50 miles to the finish and then get the train to the start.

Good luck Dave - what's the other gizmo on the handlebars?

Not sure what you are asking about, but from left to right.

Very small and rather quiet bell.
Very cheap front light that I use as a flash to help others see me.
Garmin Sat nav, it's the cheapest one that has map guidance, it has a take you back to the start which is very useful.
Boardman bike computer, does speed, distance, altitude and cadence.
Mount for a very good LED front light that I can see the road with.

Well here I am in the park just a little way from the start

This is with Joe and Jules, his girlfriend who had not done a long ride ether, they only did the 52 mile route.
On handing in my entry form I was given a map, here's the disappointing bit.

The long route was only 62 miles.
But here is the distance at the finish from the Boardman computer.

It was a mile to the train and then 4.5 miles from the station to the start.
No pictures of me at the finish but here is my bike which rode very nicely all the way.

I have not found a way to share the Garmin output in Connect, I will have a look at Strava.
They had a band playing on the finish field in the park, don't know their name but they were quite good.

Oh and I managed to average 13.2 mph while moving, I was hoping to do 12 so I an really pleased with that.

Good work Dave. :eusa-clap: :text-bravo:

If you have a Strava account already then if you plug in the Garmin into your comp, then upload manually, you can go into the garmin and find the file relating to your activity and pull that up into Strava.

Files live in Garmin under Garmin\Activities.

Cheers

Hi Mark,
I don't have a Stava account and when I tried to look at the site last night it came back say they were doing system updates and to try again later, I will have a look soon.

Well done Dave, how are the muscles today?
They are OK, LOML thought I was mad as a went out on a ride with the group, only did 26.5 miles. It was general tiredness that caught you with me, our new puppy, woke me at 6:30. I let both dogs out, sat down in my chair and fell asleep, my alarm at 8 woke me and then he got his breakfast.

I must admit to being mildly disappointed when seeing you in your lycra Dave, but only because I SOOOOOOO hoped to see you had attached cleats to your clogs!!

 :eusa-whistle:

Cheers

Well done, Dave.

Only one small thing...I'm surprised that no-ones mentioned it..but OK...here goes.

You've got a bit of road kill attached to your lower jaw

Thanks chaps!

I did cycle in my clogs, but they are just too warm in the summer. Most of my kit has come from Aldi, including what they call mountain bike shoes, no cleats, sorry Mark, I may get some toe clips at sometime.

Roger, I think I was one of the few taking part with a full beard, the chap starting the group's in London commented on it at the start and was really pleased to see me finishing some hours later.

That's very 'beardist' of him. Can't men with beards cycle long-distances ? Too much wind drag ? :o

Rod":2tx6tgt9 said:
Doesn't that slow you down - I know swimmers shave all their body hair off to reduce drag?

Rod
Well it might but I have had a beard for the last 40 years and its staying put.

I understand that the TdF guys shave their legs, not for speed but it makes cleaning cuts quicker and more effective if they come off.

Mark,

I have created a Stava account but am having trouble trying to import the ride on Sunday. I will try again later.
