Picture file size too big

It appears my last post on my workshop build has highlighted that the size of the files I am linking to in Dropbox is giving people problems as it takes a very long time for the post to load. I'm looking for help in getting file size down, so I can continue to pictures without making steam pour out of IT kit around the world.

I really am not technically literate, so please explain any suggestions in non-technical language, I won't feel patronised.

If it is helpful I take my pictures of the WIP on a Nikon Coolpix P600, transfer then to a Windows 8 PC and then simply copy them into my local Dropbox directory and wait for them to sync to the only Dropbox account. To insert in my posts I use the share link button in Dropbox, copy the URL and paste it into my post after which I change the final "0" in the link to a "1" as per instructions published on here.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Pixresizer is a freebie download. It can resize individual images, or do a whole file at a time.

I set my max. dimension to 1000 pixels.

Have you looked at photo bucket at all?

Might be another option plus gives you online storage and view ability of your photos.

I believe there's a tutorial somewhere on the forum that I think Bob did.

I do remember looking at it previously, but for the life of me I can't recall why I didn't use it. Happy to have another look at it, does that mean file size does not pose the same problems when using photbucket, or do I still need to look at reducing file size?

For my proper cameras I use Image Shack but would probably go for Photobucket now?
But as I use the Taptalk App for forum browsing on my smart phone and tablet I tend to take photos on them and post direct (after some editing if required).
Very easy and no messing about.

Yes with Photobucket the file is auto sized to the correct size for the forum.

It really is very simple to use when you know how. Have a look and if there's anything your not happy with then I would be happy to speak to you on the phone for a quick tutorial if that would help?

I'll have a look and see what I can do. Thanks for the offer, but I'll try and avoid the embarrassment of having to have a phone tutorial, but I'm not counting it out completely .

Hi Terry,

For smooth photo display on the forum, resizing has got to happen somewhere and ideally before it gets to the forum software as that operates in realtime whilst the readers wait.
Add to that Dropbox seems pretty good for documents but but slows to a snails pace for large photos.

Possibly the best solution is to use something like Photobucket which I *think* does a degree of resizing on upload - a one time operation and seems to integrate well with the forum software.

Opening an account is free and storage seems unbounded - I have several thousand photos on there and a few video clips and there has never been a threat of removal.

One regret that I have is that I did not set up a file structure for most of my photos at the start and if I were to do it now all the links on forums various would be broken.
So I would suggest that you have a folder per project from the outset and in that way if you want to find a specific photo later for other purposes, it will be much easier.

I must remember to take my own advice sometime :lol:
