• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

This new chair requires a lot of shooting with this chairmaker’s shooting board. My hand was getting sore so trying to figure out some kind of makeshift handle. I don’t have a 3d printer or anything so had to improvise. Digging through my toolbox, i have this sandpaper cleaner stick, they sell at most hardware stores or places they carry sandpaper.. the short part of stick wedges into side and has a nice cushy grip. Don’t laugh 😆 it works

While Pete and Al's are elegant solutions, if you want a fix that doesn't need any making, I found that one of those rubbery, grippy work gloves made it much easier to hold the plane well enough to push it, while not needing to grip so hard.

Yeah I may head to the hardware store to look for gloves. My main issue right now is that the metal edge parts are digging into my skin, so I need some kind of palm padding/cushion. Maybe those gloves made for tearing a house apart that have the "armor" on them. I used to have one when demoing my ceramic tile floor, and having to pick up shards of tile that were like razers. But havent seen those gloves anywhere, not sure where they went.

Good grief, you're a woodworker. You don't need a plastic handle, nor yet brass. Make something out of wood, as nature intended!

Here ya go

Whil i agree, and probably will make something similar in the future, i have a habit of getting distracted, SQUIRREL! Then I end up spending a week making something entirely different than what i set out to make lol

An approach what's perhaps not as good, as I've never tried any type of handle for my no.5 1/2 plane,
but I find a mig welding glove, one with a thicker cuff, if not just the cuff itself, makes for a quick fix which I've found pretty satisfactory.

I thought about that, my Miller MiG gloves are nice and padded, but they weren’t cheap and would hate to ruin them on the plane if i could just make a scrap handle relatively quickly

Um, are you not supposed to do that? Look, can someone please copy me into these memos? I seem to keep missing them!

Not sure why if all you are doing is planing it round why do you have the plane on its side?
Oh, I'd missed that detail, Ian. Having read it again - what in the world is a chairmaker's shooting board?! I mean I can see what it is. But why is it?

I was also curious and found this:

Exactly! Its a truly ingenious device for replicating chair legs with various tapers etc. and check this one out, where he then turns it into a makeshift pole lathe out of it with a bungee cord and a chisel:

Yes, chaps, I know. I got it. Just don't believe you need it, or why you'd want it. In truth I feel very old, and rather depressed that many, many years have passed, and yet the urge to inflict power tool habits of "perfection" on hand tool woodworking still relentlessly persists. Thought the hand tool renaissance might have evolved past that by now. :(
