• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Hi all,

Picked up this Record Vice a couple of months ago and decided it's time to get it cleaned up and working again.
Giving it a look over though and I notice that one of the nuts that hold the tree quick release plate is missing. Does anyone know what the thread is so I can source one? I see that there are spares listed on eBay but I don't fancy paying their prices unless I really have to.
Many thanks

Forgot to add a couple of photos.

By the way, this isn't the one I posted about previously, this is another one that is now destined to be an end vice replacement.

It's not impossible I have a spare. I'll have a look tomorrow. I'm liable to forget, so if I haven't responded by lunchtime, feel free to give me a reminder.

It's not too difficult to identify the thread from the bolt that you have.

On a Record vice it's definitely Whitworth. Most likely is 1/4" diameter with 20 threads per inch.

It's just possible that it's smaller - 3/16" and 24tpi - or bigger - 5/16" and 18tpi.

I've looked at mine but it's the older style so not like yours.

If it's 1/4" I can send you one.

Thanks all, been a bit busy this weekend to reply but I have checked the size and it is a 1/4".
Many thanks for the kind offer Andy, but Mike G has already offered to sort one out for me. What a nice forum this is. :eusa-clap: :D

Agreed.

I think that as the years go by, some of us leap at any chance to prove that the stuff we've been hanging onto really can come in useful!

Just as a quick aside to that statement Andy, whilst working on the renovation of the Man on the Moon pub in Kings Norton in the 80's I saved a scorched (kids with matches) plank of teak from some outside seating.
Good job really as I needed a sympathetically distressed mantle for a clients brick fireplace last year :eusa-dance:
Cheers, Andy

Quick update on the vice.
After @Mike G so very kindly sent me the correct bolt, I was able to get there vice cleaned up and put back together.

It seems that plate that works the quick release had been replaced at some time and the hole drilled to take the bolt was off centre and caused it to more quite work as it should. I've remedied that by turning it around and drilling another hole in it, a bit more central and have no installed it as an end vice in my bench.

Excuse the mess.

Good to see you coming back to update us and say you have it working.
I would just say that as far as I know the hole is usually off centre on the steel bar.
Cheers, Andy

Taken me a while but I did get there eventually. :)
That's interesting about the hole. I'm tempted to take my other one off for a look to see if it's like that.
I'm pretty sure the bar was a replacement as it had been modified to make it fit. Working nicely now though whereas before it was causing the half nut to lift up and it wouldn't wind fully out.

Let us know if you do find the end vice setup useful.
About 20 years ago I nearly did something similar, but I decided that I was probably going to be too lazy or untidy ever to use an end vice. I've still got a spare in case I change my mind, but I think the current arrangement, without one, matches the way I work.

Me too. In fact, I kept an old car jack for years with a view to scavenging the screw to make my own end vice when I made a new bench, but I've found that a doe's foot and holdfasts, plus a series of stops, covers all my needs.

I've had an end vice in that bench ever since I bought it. I was an appalling thing though that racked terribly. I did use it on occasion but probably not very often.
I will probably use it to hold pieces to be worked on with a drawknife as that end has more room to stand. I may also knock together a shave pony and use the vice to hold that.
Or, it will just stay there with minimal use until I get around to building the replacement bench I've been thinking about for the last twenty years.

Now I wouldn’t have known what a shave pony was but I happened across this the other day, I’ve often thought about making the horse version but I think this may be mor appropriate for me. Sorry to whoever made this I can’t give the credit to.
But now I look at it properly, it will only take small bits to work on and I’m not sure about that top central piece? Shouldn’t the bolt be through the other hole?
Ian

I don't have the space for a full on shave horse so was thinking this would be something I could stash in a corner and bring out when needed.
I hadn't seen the one you showed above but there seem to be a few out there of varying degrees of fuss.
This is one I was considering: Shave Pony
Here's another one: Another shave pony

I think I'll go with the banging a few rough offcuts together ethos.
