• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Replacing spiral sashes

And off to pastures new
We have two sash windows that use spiral balances. Put in by a builder yonks ago. I'd quite like to replace the sashes and also make the double-glazed. I have revised my views of those duplex bars as well as it means a cheaper double-glazing unit rather than 16 smaller units. So here's the plan and grateful for any input.

The existing sashes are 43mm thick. Now my glazing company tell me that the duplex bars are 18mm deep to fit inside a 20mm gap unit. So total dgu thickness 28mm (4-20-4). So I need to make the sashes out of 50mm (being about the thinnest I reckon I can get away with. The bottom sash is designed to be swung down for cleaning the outside.

So I reckon I can easily add 7mm to the thickness and cut away just the front edge of the bottom rail of the frame to allow for the extra thickness.

The plastic gizmo that slides up and down the outside of the spiral balance can be mounted offset to compensate for the extra width.

The top sash is more problematic as it (a) slides up and down behind this plastic moulding

and so I plan to slice off the plastic to accommodate the extra thickness and securely fix a bead to the wood surround.

Is this a goer? Any gotcha's?

Spiral balances. Never used these before but will I need a different strength spring because of the extra glass in the dgu? Or do I just wind-up the spiral on the existing one and how do I know by how much to wind it?

TIA.

It does not look like spring sash balances are adjustable from what I read.

You can calculate the weight of the new window (density of glass =2.5, wood 0.8-0.9 ish) compared to the old.

or you can be lazy and use this wot I found
https://www.mightonproducts.com/balance-calculator

Whilst you are at it, you might just as well fit new balances for peace of mind.

I'd check again with your glass company. Duplex bars are available in a range of thicknesses and depths. We use a 24mm unit as standard (4-16-4).

Thanks, Stu. Found another place that does 10mm so the dgu would be 4-12-4 which is much better. Only problem is the price. Long time since I bought any units and was surprised at the price quoted for four units. Normal glass - low E (K) - air filled. 960mm x 670mm and duplex bars to divide into 8 panes. £455 + V Gulp. Fast beginning to go off the idea.

At that price, the payback period will be about 150 years.

That sounds extortionate. True it was a couple of years ago but a full sized unit for our back door in toughened glass was about £80 including the vat via a chap who made doors and windows. I gave him £100 as he fitted it too.
Maybe a local window maker would cut you a deal?

Could anyone with a PC (and anyone with a Mac) please try the Mighton calculator using the following

A 1295

W 960

B 670

C 670

no horns.

double glazed 4 + 4

The calculator on my Mac says it is 33.68 lbs but then when I accept the t's and c' and click Calculate Standard Balances I get the message saying we have nothing suitable - please call us. Yet when you call them, they enter the same data using the same calculator and it sails through.

I've tried a couple of browsers but both are the same. I know what balances I need so time's not critical...just curious to know if it is a Mac issue. If it is I have no idea what it might be!

I just tried on FF on my PC, got the same message that nothing suitable, but then I went back and noticed I hadn't selected a Qty, soon as I put in '1' it gave me a result…

In my defence, their calculator tells you if A is greater than B + C - 25 therefore it should also check quantity > 0. There rests the case for the defence.

I decided in the end that there was not enough depth in the frame to take a double-glazing unit. So I opted to try out stick-on glazing bars onto a single large sheet of glass. I've just made the bottom sash in one of the windows and stuck it in place this morning.

I think it looks much more traditional and neater than the horrible Magnet/Jewson/Howden/DIY shed monstrosities that one of our builders stuck in many years ago. But I'm waiting to see if SWMBO notices. If she doesn't then I may well stick the original back in! Plenty of other things to be working on.
