• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

You know the sort, for holding back folding shutters in the box while open.
Now, I say open but is it classed as closed... :eusa-think:
I need to replace six but they cost a bomb from the usual search offerings.
Circa £150 each. Did try the £50 ones but were very poor quality
Not sure if a different option was evading my searches.
Cheers, Andy

Just checking I've got this the right way round.

You don't want the big iron bar which goes across all the leaves when the shutters are flat across the window.

You want some sort of little cupboard turn, which holds the folded up shutter leaves out of sight inside their boxes.

Possibly like this, ominously listed as poa

i don't think I'd be too keen on spending c.£1k on six latches either...but for what it's worth, they'll likely be rather lovely!

I just spent more than I would normally want to on some door furniture from Broughtons of Leicester (who also have shutter latches listed, at £160 - £210!!) and whilst the bank balance suffered, the door is going to look wonderful.

You'll likely still be enjoying the latches long after the pain of splashing the cash has faded!

Broughtons!

Blimey I remember when they had a shop in Leicester itself, used to love rootling about in there.
Then they moved out to Anstey and sought a different type of customer.
Who remembers Harry Enfield’s “I saw you coming “ shop? :D

Off piste L, but we used to live in the fair city of Leicester in the early 60's when my dad used to work at the RN recruiting office - Rob

Hi Andy, I didn’t realise that was you over there, strong magnets? Almost anything else is going to be fouled by the folded shutter behind I think, unless you are designing the whole thing from scratch of course.

You're right, Broughton's prices can be eye-watering (the bits I bought were from the economy end of their offerings!) but the Harry Enfield reference is unfair - theyre not selling over-priced tat to gullible fashion victims (that was the basis of the Harry Enfiled sketches wasn't it ?) they're just flogging high end gear, at very high end prices.

It's a shame the architectural ironmongery market is so polarised - there's the run-of-the-mill stuff you see in the sheds and builders merchants, and the high-end stuff from the likes of Broughtons, but nothing much in beteween as far as I can see.

A real longshot but you could try calling these people, proper old fashioned ironmongers ( the tidy looking shopfront is only there because it was replaced under insurance after a car ran into it, hence the request on the cill) they have boxes of stuff that have never been opened.
Not sure how well you’ll get on over the phone, but if they might have something message me and i’ll go down and take a few pics for you. ( its only 5min walk from me).

Yes Andy, and as it happens correct on both accounts :eusa-clap:
There's one set of shutters that will require a flat bar, iron will suffice as these get even more eye wateringly expensive in brass.
Cheers Andy

I have shopped there previously and have returned items previously , examine closely the goods as I've had old batch new batch mismatched items and yes all sorted but not convenient.
The showrooms are wonderful and (if they let me back in :eusa-whistle: ) I would hopefully be examining these latches carefully.

Ah yes, same old me ;)
I have a cunning plan :eusa-think:

Thanks very much for this contact and your very kind offer.....
I rang but alas the voice of "senior" years said it had been a long time since they had them.
Cheers, Andy

So, moving on with a different train of thought I'm looking for good quality cabinet door mortice latches to possibly attach a brass angled cover to and so give me a similar product.
Looking at this one at the moment and have asked for the sizes with a bit more clarity.

https://boulters-chandlery.co.uk/epages ... HW08.02.01

All I then need is a suitable turn to operate them.

Any other supplier out there for quality cabinet mortise latches?

Cheers, Andy

Would you be able to adapt a small mortice lock? Ie marry the key to whatever sort of turn you had in mind. If so look on ebay for reclaimed cabinet locks. Something like this?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/324880549779 ... Sw3ZhdJNEU

Though finding a set of six may be a problem. But not impossible, I bought 6 of these for a display case i have planned. Purportedly came from a banks secure filing cabinets. 7 levers. They were £8 each , but only 1 key ( they are keyed alike.

Have you looked at bathroom locks/latches?

Thanks Artiglio and wow those look stunning quality.
I had made suggestions along the lock idea but that was rejected.

I've been trying to remember what was on the shutters when I briefly lived in a nice old house in Bath, 40+ years ago. I'm pretty sure it's the same as I have seen elsewhere (I've been discreetly peering through windows). It wasn't the expensive special latches you're after, it was just a few brass turn buttons, like these https://www.ironmongerydirect.co.uk/pro ... f-5-519425

Probably too cheap for your job.

Ah yes Andy, so simple and the next level with the brass backplate add the extra quality but alas the only wood in the area is the beaded edge of the architraves which in turn is the receiving rebate.

UPDATE.....
So initially we bought the cheapest option available and I advised that the work required to put them right would be too costly and best returned for refund.
Well, it happened to be enroute and were taken back (not by me), only to be "sorted out" and brought back.
They await my return to work :eusa-think:

I don't know whether this would suit your requirement, but I have used these before on Georgian shutters in recessed boxes. Slidy bolt goes into brass plate on the base of the shutter box.

You can also use them to link top and bottom shutters, but you have to be very careful that they run true to each other. And the other thing I have learnt with old shutters, is: never disturb the hinges unless you have to. It takes a (word I can't say) lot of (word I can't say)ing around to get them smoothly running again.

Thank you Tresias, that is a neat little solution.
I concur with the hinge disturbance issues :eusa-doh:

Ps got an appointment near Broughton's today....
Might be latch fiddling before the days out :eusa-whistle:
