• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Spot for a cabin, delayed for 5 years, maybe this year.

What did I say? You will definitely have that finished before I get my workshop done. We are back in Pennsylvania for a month packing everything before the big move up North.
So frustrating that all the semi decent weather will have gone before I can get stuck in again grrrr.

I think you are right, I dread our next move whenever it happens.

Did you notice the "topping out" Ian.;)
Hard to see the spruce bough as it blends in with the forest.

Excellent! I hadn’t noticed it, good to see your keeping up the tradition, I’ve read about it but can’t remember the symbolism. Also realised I haven’t had a good look in my new Barn to see if it still exists in there.

Why are you using cedar posts as rafters when the rest of the construction is from square edged timber?

Two reasons, the main one is I already had them and secondly the rafters will be seen from inside the cabin which is a feature that I like.
Our barn is built with square edge timber with pole rafters and the look has stuck on me.

No work done since this past weekend so I tarped the deck for rain protection. Hopefully get back at it in a week or so.1000011922.jpg

After eleven days off due to work I have applied a Sico stain sealer on two 4x4s. We choose to go for a brownish look.1000012043.jpg

Stain on a spare Cedar post. I really would prefer it to age naturally but me wife does not like grey. Any thoughts?

I'm in awe, Duke. I'm impressed with your ingenuity re the 'ladder' etc but you've still got to get those heavy timbers out from your car. How do you do it ?

Getting then out was easy, slid them so one end rested on the deck then slid it out of the truck bed. Getting them into the truck was hard.

Between rain I managed to install two salvaged windows. The one fixed unit of a casement has lost it's seal. I will remove it and have our local window company make a new one.

Started installing the metal roof but only got two in place due to rain. Hopefully with the help from a buddy we will complete the roofing tomorrow

The metal roof is done and working on the board and batten. A little more to do on the back side then on to the battens. The wood cladding is a cottage grade 1"x 8" rough sawn White Pine. My wife insisted on B and B and not the horizontal look.Who am I to disagree.

Thanks Ian, i'm trying to find a cheap wood stove (used) so that I can finish the interior during the cold weather

Sounds idyllic, US and Canada seem to favour big stoves that burn for hours/days, I’m having difficulty finding a smallish stove that we can run for a couple or a few hours that is used for its visual appeal as well as heat, which in my opinion is the way most stoves are used in the uk.
Might resort to bringing one back from the uk in a container we are planning on having, a Stovax Sheraton for our uk readers.
Yes I know the standards are different but at least the flue sizes are the same.

You can get a very small stove with a glass front/door for the Usa Stove Company. It is a nice one rated for up to 700 sq.ft. and I believe 26000 BTUs. Pretty sure the big box stores carry them. They do here.

So, after looking at three used wood stoves that were badly rusted and would require a lot of work and half the cost of a new one I decided on a new stove. Today was installation day.
