• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. Spot for a cabin, delayed for 5 years, maybe this year.

Yesterday I took a walk to the cabin. Wore my chest waders to keep dry, water almost went over the top of them. Lake level was 3' higher than normal, never seen levels like this.3199.jpg3200.jpg3202.jpg3203.jpg3204.jpg
 
So high water was lower than the top of your footing blocks? Are you punching the air with joy because you planned appropriately or are you doing a sharp intake of breath because it could have gone sideways with a bit more water?
 
Both, it sits on the highest area which has never seen flood water until this year. Looks like the lower set support post at the perimeter did.
I will install screw rods into the ground and bolt them to the cabin, don't want it floating away.
 
I suspect he might mean climate change?

For us it is the other way round. The Netherlands is renowned for having to live with copious amounts of water. Well, this spring (as a matter of fact the last few springs now) we have a shortage of water. We definitely could use a bit of what you have in excess over here. It is getting weird...

I rest my case M'Lud....and, in doing so, ask for thousands of other phenomena across the world to be taken into account.
 
Really enjoyed reading this, this morning Duke (Scott?). Probably we'll above my skill level but I'll be building a shed (not a log cabin) at the bottom end of our property (not in acres, but back garden measured in metres 😁).

Will certainly be taking inspiration from this and keeping an eye out. That log burner is a lovely thing. Does it need an outlet for fumes Duke as I'm wondering whether it'll be a good investment for me and how/where to place it - just laying out the corners and removing a small tree to the opposite side, this week. Place the log burner that is.
 
If you look at past pics you will see a black pipe extending from the top of the stove and through the roof.
Through the roof by code an insulated, double walled stainless chimney is required and all combustible material required a 2" set back.
And there are setbacks from walls that are also required. Every model is different.
I would check with your local authorities first or an installer with what we call a WETT certificate.
Others here can maybe help out.
I know what is permissible here but know nothing about your regulations. :)
 
We had a tornado just miss us yesterday, none the less high wind and torrential rain. Thought I better check on the cabin. 4795.jpg4796.jpg
 
No damage to the cabin from fallen trees. While down there made my mind up to build a deck across the front of the cabin with the stairs facing the path on. Most likely an 8' projection to allow for chairs, table and BBQ. I first need to batten and stain the front. The deck will not be attached and will be fastened to helical screw posts so as not to float away if we have abnormal flooding as this year. Will be a while to do all this work.
 
Missed your updates on your cabin over the last couple months with all that rain and the lake rising so much Scott... playing catch up thanks to Dave 👍🙏.

Just a thought - if this is the highest you've seen the lake... Could the beavers be having something to do with this 🤔. I know nothing about beavers except the recent re-wilding taking place in some areas in the UK and released beavers are establishing themselves and having a seen beneficial impact, if slowly, on flooding. Maybe your beavers have built too good a damaged - or damp - stopping the lake waters from flowing out... 🤔

Apart from that... beautiful spot for a cabin 👌 😍

Would that be holding back the flow Scott, and adding to the rise of the lake? After all the snow etc., as well. Nature at work...

From what I've seen here they like to block the flow of streams/small rivers with their dams so that they slow the outlet flow and flood neighbouring ground... changing the habitat of that area.
