• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I have been approached about getting a quote for spray on roof insulation. My wife answered the phone and passed the phone to me after telling him we may be interested! The first hurdle was they would not make an appointment if my wife was not present, as she is often out and probably would not let anyone in the house if she was in, that was a non starter so they are probably never going to ring back as he had to go and establish if they could let someone visit me if I am on my own.

After the salesman had explained that it was a new system and unrelated to the old stuff, this new stuff is ipen cell and lets moisture through and does not stick to the tiles so you can make repairs. Not sure how it stays up. No one is installing fibre glass anymore apparently. I did not mention the rolls I have piled up in the attic which I am told are more effective if I lay them out.

The question from myself he avoided is: I have a cold roof with lots of eve vents to let the air blow through to stop condensation and rotting roof timbers, how does insulating the underneath of the roof work if there is cold air blowing through?

I am asking on here in the hope that someone can answer the question and say what would need to be done to make it work? From memory the wall cavity is not sealed but there is cavity wall insulation in the form of polystyrene balls.

Also I live in a bungalow with a large floor area, one main roof along the length split into two attics with five lower trussed roofs at right angles so I suspect it will be prohibitively expensive.

The chances of me buying something that will probably take longer to pay back than I have to live are about the same as hell freezing over despite the special deal as I am an OAP. However I did read a very inventive essay from a student which did prove that hell has already frozen over. https://www.netjeff.com/humor/item.cgi? ... thermo.txt

My gut feel: Filling the attic with cold air from outside means spraying insulation on the pitched section is pointless. Even if the system is reversible and non damaging.

Get your rolls of insulation that you already have, laid. Buy more so it is all 200mm or more thick. Cheap and quick. No snake oil salesmen involved.

Iirc the regs state 250mm now. I had a call from one of the insulation companies ........ rogues ...... who insisted on my wife being present, for a hard sell I presume. Nothing came of it after I questioned them.

As has been said above, as you have a ventilated cold roof....
So why insulate under the tiles if you have loft insulation above the upstairs ceiling? You only need to insulate under the actual roof if you are intending to convert the loft which is a whole different ball game.
Put the phone down cos that person is talking carp.

I am very sceptical about anything that is being marketed by unsolicited telesales and cannot see how any spray on insulation product doesn’t increase the risk of roof timbers being prone to rot.

These people really get my goat. They know NOTHING about the product and they know NOTHING about the proper placement of insulation! What they have said about it being a new product that doesn't stick to whatever etc is total rubbish. Nobody uses fiberglass anymore??? REALLY? The fact is that there is zero point in insulating under a roof if the roof space is not lived in...
Because you have insulation above the ceiling (or you will have when you roll it out!) This is correct and effective.
Its all a cheap marketing pile if s&1t. Please do not engage with them.

Avoid them like the plague.

There is a post over on the other place where the mortgage people are insisting it be removed...or somesuch condition.
