• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I will shortly be embarking on the build of a cot for my first grandchild.

Today I picked up the wood from Sherwood Forest. (Well, Patrick at Forest2Furniture in Eakring)

Does anyone want to have a go at identifying the type of wood …

Lovely project!

Don't know what wood it is (cherry?), but have you selected those boards because you're planning curves?

Sounds like Rob knows the answer. I've never bought a piece like the top one. I assume it was pretty cheap!

I clearly need someone to manage my online presence better:ROFLMAO:

Yes, it's London Plane. Photographs don't do it justice due to the saw marks but it's some of the best looking wood I have used to date.

The "hour glass" shaped board was a rounding on the overall bill and is destined for box making. There are no planned curves for the cot although my lovely daughter in law does keep thinking of new design ideas!

I'm going to give it a couple of weeks to acclimatise and will then post my progress.

I also picked up some Sweet Chestnut and a beautiful English Walnut board. I much prefer buying from places like Forest2Furniture to the big timber yards as you get to hear the provenance of the timber and certainly in the case of Patrick, he'll flip as many boards as needed to make sure you get what you are looking for.

Will it look like this when it's finished?

This is some London Plane I acquired from a tree removed from Kensington High Street.

I've used London Plane before and the true quarter sawn surfaces are really stunning, but I've found it tends to be a bit 'fluffy' so slightly awkward to scrape and sand. It's a bit good when it's planed though! - Rob

Have you bought the mattress yet? My resident expert says you need a high wool content, she says that the fire retardant is the cause of infant cot death. Wool doesn’t catch fire easily. Always a good idea to be able to measure the actual mattress to be used.
Have you finalised the design? Or perhaps you are confident and don’t need/want our input. I certainly wouldn’t appreciate a design of mine dissected!

Mattress is bought Ian and what a wormhole that was. Since we had children it seems that there is a whole industry backed by conflicting advice that has sprung up. My daughter likes to do her research and would still be reading up on the merits of wool, coir, foam and different pocket springs if I hadn't intervened with a purchase from John Lewis based on the best customer review score.

Design is locked down - it's traditional with a simple tweak so it can convert into a cot bed (they didn't exist when we had our children either!) which was what they wanted.

I'll post some details of the design when I get chance.

If my wife ever comes out of the shoe shop she's gone into saying she'll just be five minutes half an hour ago I'll get on with it this afternoon ;)🤣
