WIP: Another door replacement...

Some may remember my posting of replacing the 15 pane porch door for a half glazed wood panelled door I'd got many years ago...


Well, the door from the front room to the kitchen, 6 panelled door, splintered at the catch sight on the face, piece lost over time so didn't get get glued back. It was small and probably wouldn't have stayed in place anyway...




So, as I'd not cut up the old 15 pane door I considered using it to replace the kitchen/living room one. LOML wasn't sure so it had to be held in place to get an idea... response was ... . So... it needed trimming to size, old hinge placements patched and sanded.






In measuring up it became obvious that the frame isn't square... why would I have expected it to be, being a property built sometime around 1796! I don't know why I didn't realise from replacing the door around 37~38 years ago... Anyway, now I'm aware of it, how to try and get the correct angles... *lightbulb moment* - pieces of cardboard, piece of thin timber, pencil - cardboard to floor (bottom left corner), put towards door frame, thin timber against frame, pencil line = angle. Same with top righthand corner = angle.


Mark up, cut with plunge saw... there're correct ... (Apologies... didn't take any of the plunge saw work... )

The catch is something else for attention once temporarily hung to get the right placement. I'm hoping any patching can be hidden with the handle plates... .

Having trimmed for a rough shortening for height, just to give LOML an idea of how it may possibly look, the angles for the door frame opening needed doing. This morning was the 1st opportunity to do so as previous days had been washing/drying on the line days! Again, no plunge saw photos... getting carried away with doing the work before it got too hot!


Angles trimmed... for correct! Then both faces sanded...






Then put back into the workshop as temperatures were getting too much for me...

Contemplating how best to approach marking/fitting of hinges. Most likely will need new ones as the old brass are showing signs of wear.


As I'll need to check for the angles being correct I'm thinking the door will need to be put in place loose, height adjustment (?) for floor clearance and the hinges marked...

Crikey I think I would rather have done an edge repair on the 6 panel door! It’s not going to be easy job sanding those glazing bars.

I know what you mean Ian... a thin strip down the edge... job done

Thing with the 6 panel is the gaps and angles at the top and the bottom - around ¾"~1" at the bottom with the 6 panel. Why I didn't realise it all those years ago I don't know? Probably just the rush of replacing 7 doors?

The reason for sanding the faces of this 15 pane one was because it 'looked' dirty in some places. The sanding has removed that. I'm going to be treating with the same stain treatment as the other doors so, gently does it, I'll see how it takes in one area on the bars... probably low down...

If that doesn't go as hoped I'll have to get a sanding block and sandpaper on them . WIP... wish me luck (the things we try for those we love)

If she doesn't like it when 'completed' I can do the edge repair to the 6 panel

Well... got a week away in Cornwall - but been putting this door replacement off for a while. There was a niggling something in the back of my mind about something I had to do 30+ years ago when I put the 6 panel in but couldn't remember.

Anyway... got on with measurements for the door and placement for the hinges - or hoped I'd got it correct. The 6 panel had a biggish gap at the bottom to take into consideration as the top also so hinge placement measurements couldn't be takfrom the old door.

With fingers crossed I marked up and chiseled out for the hinges - fingers crossed also I had picked the correct side for them to hinge from.

Came to removing the old door and fitting the replacement. It didn't twig at that time that the hinge side of the frame wasn't square... that little niggle I mentioned...

Fitted the replacement - hinge slots lined up so that was a win - but the door wouclose!? That niggle... sorry - no photos.

Looked at the frame and the reason hit me - the wall runs out in this old house from 1796 'ish... not a square true angle in the damn place! So... "I'll trim the hinge side to put an angle to it" says I... so did - double checking I put it on the right side of the hinge frame...



Recut for the hinges, refitted the hinges and put the door back on.



Still wouldn't close fully - but did more than previously. Bu%%&r! Loosen hinges and pack out... door closed but not fully clearing the floor...



So... this morning... remove door stops because the timber, hinge side, wasn't true - bumps in it. Trim with an angle for the door to close against and square up other side. Close door, pack a bit more behind the hinges to be able to do so and fit the timbers around for the door to close against.



Tomorrow is a case of trimming off the hinge side of the panel door and fit to the door frame, hinge side, to help the door/hinges fit better... and get rid of those 'packers' presently being the hinges...

What I usually do is remove any stops ( if possible ) which are binding with the door then reinstall the stops when the door is hung satisfactory.
Looks like this one is a real pain in the arse.

Sorry Scott... I 'know' I replied to you... but it's not here ... maybe I didn't push the 'post reply' button...

I replied something like this...

I'd measured up for the hinge position and door frame angle so I could (so the plan was) just remove and fit... obviously it didn't work out that way ... I'd totally forgotten about the frame not being square on the left side - hence trying to get an angle on the left-hand side of the door... although I got 'an' angle it still wouldn't close because of the stop on that side not having a square edge. House may be 1796 'ish build but I don't think that stop is original

So... did remove the stops but still not correct on that angle - hence try to remove the angle from the old door to then fit on the left-hand frame... to square up... that's the idea anyway . Done the cut but other life things stepped in... hoping to get back to it tomorrow.

Meanwhile... LOML/SWMBO of 45 years 11 months - today)... said to me after removing the angled piece... "Have you taken that door round to the recycling centre yet...?" My reply was "Later darling".... She obviously hasn't learnt anything about me and wood in all that time



Can't take 'good' wood to the recycling centre...

Oh! I was also hoping not to havevto remove the door stop pieces because I knew it'd disturb the old paint... now I need to sand around, spply primer, undercoat and top... the job goes on and on
