• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

WIP - my version of Dr Al’s travel tool chest and workbench

Got the screws for the vise thread-locked to the cast thumbscrews. Only question i have now is that some of the threadlocked dripped down the thread of the threaded rod. So i need to remove this if its dry? And how? Wore brush or some chemical?

I presume that is something other than Loctite 603 - is it a "temporary" threadlock?

I imagine acetone will shift it. Acetone is wonderful stuff and it's well worth having a bottle of it in the workshop.

It was the only “Permanent” threadlocker i could find nearby. But says permanent, 250psi strength. I figure if it breaks i’ll get the MIG out.

Looked through my wife’s nail polish stuff and found acetone but its called “nail strenthener” or something so i am worried it has some other stuff in there

Yeah, most nail varnish remover is acetone plus additives. The proper stuff is cheap & incredibly useful. I buy it from hexeal, 5 litres at a time (I use it a lot). This is an amazon link for the stuff I get (direct from hexeal is cheaper). I obviously don't know what US suppliers are best but I'd be surprised if it's difficult to get hold of over there.

Well, I live in California, who has some of the strictest laws when it comes to various chemicals. We can no longer even get denatured alcohol over here for shellac. Amazon blocks a lot of stuff, when I go to buy something there it says "not available to ship to your region". But surprisingly I do see 100% pure acetone available on the US site.

OK so i found the type of loctite I used was 263. According to AI here is the difference on my bolts, so while the 603 is quite a bit stronger, I doubt I could break the 263 with finger strength on a 3" thumbscrew.:

"
1. Loctite 263 (Red Threadlocker)
  • Expected Unseated Breakaway Torque: ~400 to 450 in-lbs (33 to 38 ft-lbs) on an unseated 1/2" bolt.
  • How it performs: For context, Henkel’s official data sheet certifies Loctite 263 at 290 in-lbs on a smaller 3/8" bolt. As thread surface area scales up to a 1/2" bolt, the breakaway torque naturally increases. It cures to a hard polymer that fills the thread crests evenly, ensuring that when you hit it with a wrench, the bond snaps cleanly away without shredding the thread geometry. [1, 2]

2. Loctite 603 (Green Retaining Compound)

Expected Unseated Breakaway Torque
Highly unpredictable, potentially exceeding 600+ in-lbs (50+ ft-lbs)
, or it could jam entirely."
