Wooden planes

Came across this nice display in a pub in Lyndhurst (New Forest) at the weekend. Would be better to see them being used, but at least they're there for people to see.



We were doing a three day family cycling trip with my SIL and her family from our house near Basingstoke to the coast at Lymington. It was a great trip through beautiful countryside (mostly off road). Unfortunately we didn't quite make it to the coast because some scrotes stole half of the bikes after day 2...

I quite agree. The really sad thing though is that the display case probably cost a lot more than the planes.

It really needs someone.... anyone, to put the wedges in the right way around, too.

No particularly unusual or special ales that I can recall, but pretty much anything tastes good after a full day of cycling!!

It would be good if the landlord thought to label each plane so as folk would know what they are called and put in a small sample of wood worked with each of them so that it is clear what they do.

While I share your thought on this, it wouldn't work here, and that's what is wrong or disappointing about this display.

There is no organising principle behind it. I'm sure that the planes and other tools have not been selected with any understanding of what they are or what they are for. (Evidence of this includes several with wedges missing or inserted wrongly.)

I think the most likely origin is that someone has bought a bulk lot cheaply at auction and put them in an old display case, which was also cheap because it was broken.

It's just a bit of interior deco that will be ripped out in a few years time when the pub gets its next makeover.

If they are like places here, they either have a low cost interior decorator or someone working there is an amateur of the same and they like to put old stuff on the wall. You might be able to just get the planes in general if you ask them to be on the lookout for something else that could fill the case.

My mother likes to do that kind of thing (but she is a maker, or was before she started to lose her memory). In terms of the case costing more than the planes, you'd be surprised what people can find - I'll bet they didn't pay much for either.

I stepped into my mother's second garage about five years ago (when she was more with it) to see gorgeous 125 year old display cases, a wall full of them, and some almost 10 feet tall. I asked why she had them, and she said that a property owner she knows (someone with rental property) saw that a neighbor was tearing out the insides of an old abandoned country store (that may be a US term - sort of an outpost some of everything - from rifles to elixirs to shoes and clothes) and they were going to smash them and trash them. So they were free.

At least I know now this isn't a distinctly US trend.
