• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Workshop now officially too cold....

...to work in. 0.6 degrees. Doubt if a fan heater will have much effect.

Cold water pump in cellar - frozen.

Hot water pump NRV ...now much worse and so pump switched off. Awaiting part.

Hey ho...at least we have power, unlike the Ukrainians. So shouldn't really complain.

I've had the heat on low (1.5KW oil filled rad + external thermostat) for the last week; a balmy 1degC at 8am this morning, but I was able to do some gluing with the aid of a 'leccy underblanket and an old duvet to cover it - Rob

I stop when the inside of the roof starts to freeze and thaw with added drips.

I'm well past that at the moment. I will be covering the work bench and all machines tonight until the weather turns again.
next year I'm going to reroof with insulated panels (or find a friendly builder to take away the prefab and replace with brick.

I have a pair of outisde trainers that I leave by the kitchen door. 20 minutes ago, I'd spilt some water on the laces. Just went outside...frozen solid. Thermal heat sensor gun tells me the tiles are -13 degrees :o

I tried going in the workshop recently, my body was fine just my hands dont like the cold. I had 2 pairs of nitrile surgical gloves and a pair of them black neoprene type gloves, I was touching metal parts which wick the heat from my hands, I could feel my fingers blanch with white finger. I even have a chicken brooder lamp to stick my hands under. I lasted an hour before it was too painful and had to come back indoors.

I did find that those sachet chemical hand warmers placed inside the glove by the palm worked a treat.

Two electric convector rads got the temp up from 6°C to 17° in about an hour and a half. Sometimes a small workshop is an advantage.

13 degrees this morning in the workshop

& soon gets a bit warmer with the machines on & me working

I don’t have an outside workshop. But when my fingers stick to the metal handle of the front door I know it’s a bit brisk.

This is what it was like on Saturday in the Borders. God bless the Landy.

Snow landy 10x22.jpg

More snow Saturday night. So about 100mm in all now.

We got back up to the ‘burgh on Sunday. Where there is no snow, but -7C last night. In the Borders, on our hill, -10C.

Just winter up here… What’s the fuss about?

By far the most beaten up, hideous Landy currently on the telly is Robin's one in the current series of 'Strike' on BBC1 - Rob

Bah, that's nothing. This is the Series 11A we drove the length of Africa in 1994/95:

It fell over in a little puddle in Zaire. We rebuilt the engine, and the gearbox, on the road. Every single part of the suspension was changed at least once. Wheel-bearings were about a fortnightly job. It consumed more oil than petrol (well, not quite, but you know.......). We used the starting handle to start it for about 3 months. The hand-brake tried to hold the car by gripping the prop-shaft. First 2 gears were "crash" (double de-clutch). The door fell off in Zaire. You had to rotate the steering wheel about half a turn just to stay in a straaight line.

I sat in the comfort of a Landcruiser of exactly the same vintage as the Landy. The only thing that failed on mine was the radiator cap. The thing is......we spent more replacing the radiator cap in Nairobi than we did on the Landy in the entirety of the trip. Parts were cheap and everywhere, and everyone could fix a Landy. Toyota? Not exactly.

Is everyone slowly warming up?
Just above freezing here
Forecast for Monday is 13 degrees

Well, the frost on the tarmac has melted but since the ground is still several minus degrees, the melt has turned the place into a skid pan.

I'm not too worried as I've got a set of those pull-on rubber crampons.

Weak sun here - solar pv only making 100-150 watts. Pond ice is about 1/2" and grass still frosty white although cars thawing so we are getting there. Tomorrow we have road ice warnings with rain due to fall on frozen surfaces. Forecast temps tomorrow due to head positive and remain so during the day, 9-10 predicted on Monday.
I'm hoping the rain will bring down the last of the leaves and those already fallen in the ponds currently ice bound can be cleared up.
Leave on the wisteria have stayed on incredibly late this year.
Strange seasons these days. Last year I was picking raspberries in early December but this year I could cut them back having finished fruiting this October.

I was supposed to have finished work last Wednesday for the Xmas break but have had call outs every day with burst & frozen pipes, roll on Monday & the promised 13 degrees

I dropped into Scawton Sawmill which is between Thirsk and Helmsley yesterday ...

It actually felt colder inside their warehouse than out of it.

Did you know the brass monkey thing refers to cannon balls. 'freeze the balls off a brass monkey'. :D
