• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Rome's musical storytelling isn't everyone's cup of tea but I rather enjoy it, covers some little known, very interesting, and somewhat controversial topics whilst not leaning left nor right. "To Die Among Strangers" comes from the album "Flowers from Exile", the songs within are based on the events of the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39 which was a truly horrid affair by all accounts which would result in the dictator Francisco Franco seizing power and holding onto it for over 30 years. His album "A Passage to Rhodesia" that covers the Rhodesian Bush War and the complicated politics surrounding it is also excellent.

I know you're a bit of a Dolly Parton fan, I was out the workshop late one night a couple of years back and Annie Mac was DJing on Radio One and she introduced this new song which I thought was great, a kind of modern rendition of "Jolene". A word of warning, it's a little sweary so you might not want little ones listening:

I'll chip in with a band / artist we caught at a local hall during the Shetland Folk Festival many moons ago [when I had hair] which was a double take moment because the 3 guys on stage captivated the entire audience. Martin Harley Band was their name. The next band on were an equally talented bunch from Mongolia.

This is a few years ago now, but one of the several bands I'm hanging on to tickets for postponed events in the hope of one day seeing them - Dead Can Dance and the extraordinary voice of Lisa Gerrard. Been listening to them for 20 years, and still not tired.

If you like the blues, you'll probably like this. It's a live version but pretty close to the studio recording that came on the radio at about 3:30 am one night in the mid 80s while I was on guard in an army place near the Dutch border. I was hooked instantly.

Wow. Thanks Tony. Always good to hear new music and bands but that's extraordinary. Will be looking into them.
Years ago (before I was accessing tinternet), I bought the Gladiator soundtrack just for that one bit of music where there is that mournful almost arabesque female voice lifting and echoing. I was in love with it. That little brief piece of yet another Hans Zimmer Movie Soundtrack.
So all these years later, after listening to you post Dead Can Dance, I was reminded of it. So much so I thought I'd post the youtube clip. Searching for it I realised that Lisa Gerrard is singing on the Gladiator soundtrack.

Talk about full circle! That's what I love about music. An endless journey but one where we keep bumping to old friends along the way. More miles you put in, the easier the walking gets.

Not a Jazz listener Andy in any sense but I like that and see where you fell in love. That's about as far down the Jazz road I can get in terms of enjoyment mind. My limitation absolutely but I can distinctly hear Nina Simone in that piano solo and a host of other influences like Blues as you say but any more 'individual' than that is mostly beyond me personally.

Not so sure about the whole shabby chic look, holes in trousers and all that. Maybe it's an American thing to be authentic? Go back to 'real' country/folk???' No offence meant. Bit forced to my mind but I'm a cynic and the music is good anyway.

He's very good. The drummer on most of his work, Jay Bellerose, is one of the best drummers currently playing. Incredibly tasteful playing, and incredibly cool drums.
 
Here's one that was a constant companion in my student days from the sadly late and undoubtedly great John Martyn. "Who?" I hear you cry. He never got the mass recognition he deserved IMO. [youtube]wxypeGc[/youtube]
