• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

I’ve just seen yet another add for what I think must be imported rubbish furniture. This one describes the junk as light oak and then goes on to state that it’s made of cedar!
How the hell does that work as an accurate description ?

Probably written by a chatbot, like so many eBay ads are now. Any old nonsense will do, if it slightly resembles a description.

I guess , light oak, sounds better than, light oak finish. Almost everything for sale today has deceptive wording and the marketers figure most people won't read the full description of the product.
And as Andy mentioned chatbot.

These people are selling to the general public rather than woodworkers like you and I, the description should avoid missleading people as this seems to be doing. Regretably just the word Oak seems to imply solid quality, it must be time to grip the importers of this poor quality junk.

You could try contacting the ASA. They might follow up

Ray.
It doesn't appear to be one of the usual suppliers who do “ Oak Furniture “ for the local council estate but the quality seems to match.

There is no such timber as “light oak” is there?
The advertisers would definitely claim it refers to the colour not the timber species.
Caveat emptor I’m afraid and gawd help the uneducated.

I don’t agree, in my opinion all oak can be described as light oak until its colour is darkened using stain of some kind.
The only exception being that sold as “ brown oak”which I understand to be affected by some kind of fungus or disease which affects the colour during growth.

Provided the ad doesn't say 'Made from light oak' surely ?
