• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Hi all. The pics show a rough sawn board which surfaced while cleaning out the timber storage area - from right in a at the back. It's been in there for about 30 years. I have no recollection whatsoever as to what it might be.

I'd appreciate some help with identification of the species.

It's clearly darkened quite a lot by now, and is probably a tiny shade redder than in the pics. It's definitely a hardwood. The close up shows an area planed to expose fresh wood.

I'd presumed from a distance that it was oak, but it doesn't look much like it. It could be elm (I had some back then), but I'm a bit thrown by the red tint and anyway can't clearly remember the detail of what it looked like.

Thanks

I would’ve said it looks closer to Walnut, but it’s almost impossible to tell from the photos. A clearer photo of the face grain and especially the end grain would make it easier to identify.

I cleaned up some more areas of the board and took more pics T. Any help?

Nice find! Enough to make a little side table like this one: IMG_20250420_122948486_MF_PORTRAIT.jpg

One of my most satisfying projects, about seven years ago.

Ta guys.

Great that it turns out to be walnut although I can't for the life of me remember how it might have come to be in the store. It's been there for a very long time (in the under roof storage area to the left of the rack in the pic) - near to 30 years I suspect.so It's definitely well equilibrated......

It's as you say Andy enough for a small piece, time to figure out a home for it...
