• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

The met office have issued a red alert for Thursday. Was supposed to be on the train that day, but have canceled and rearranged our trip. Should be much cooler - normal summer weather - on Saturday.

I'm dreading it. Met Office are forecasting 39 degrees here on Wednesday and Thursday:

On Wednesday night it'll still be 27 degrees at 11pm!

Channel 4 weather after the news at 7pm said that by 2056 the UK could see regular summer temperatures of 45degC, which begs the question of what the temps will be like in places like Spain? - Rob

On the other hand, the warming might cause the Gulf Stream to break down and we could end up much colder on average.
 
Retirement is months away- I have to work outside in the peak of it this week.

I've got 2 guys working here at the moment. They've done only half a day today because of the heat and are not coming back this week. We've had several days on the trot of 39C, although the forecast has backed away from the 42C that they were promising us just a few days ago.
It's too hot to do anything, so I don't blame them.

Not really any change here in Southern Spain, just the normal

This morning down on the cost in Marbella it was 32 c
In land where I operate from 38 c
A remember approx 20 years ago Inland we had temps ranging between 45 and 50….now that was scorching

Many years ago I was camping in the Kimberleys in NW Western Australia. There was a big bushfire burning over the horizon, and some rangers were burning off ahead of it to create a fire break. (Yeah, they know what they're doing...). We got chatting with one of them, who said something like......"good job it's not hot, or we'd be struggling with this one". It was 45 Celcius. And he wasn't being ironic.

Why does humidity affect how bad it feels. I've heard of foreigners from much hotter climates struggle in blighty.
It was 31 here oop north, The house was 22 which felt lovely and chilly when coming inside.
 
Thats true - we have people from Zimbabwe and Namibia at work who struggle
Ive said in the past that they should be used to it but the reply was in both cases " different sort of heat"

As I understand it...

When it's low humidity, sweat evaporates quickly, taking heat away with it and lowering the temperature of the body. When it's high humidity, the air has so much moisture in it already that the sweat stays put and makes you feel clammy while also not evaporating and taking the heat away.

There's a thing called a "wet bulb event" where the temperature and humidity are both high and the human body can't cool itself: these events are extremely dangerous. The name comes from the fact that a wet cloth over the bulb of a thermometer doesn't affect the temperature recorded by the thermometer (as there's no evaporation).
 
This should answer your questions re humidity and most likely the reasons those from hotter climate (such as Zimbabwe... etc) struggle here...

39°c forecast here for tomorrow!
We’ve had some success with hanging damp washing on a clothes airer in the main south facing living room with a tower fan blowing air through it. Seems to help. External shutters are a bonus too. Parasol shields one window so we do not sit in total darkness.
I’ve got 6 hours in an air conditioned cabin to look forward to early Friday morning on a cross channel cruise. I’ll be catching up on lost sleep I expect.
 
Warm here again today.
I’ve been getting up at 5.30 all week so have a few hours to move my various tasks along.
Our rear garden is such that there is always shade somewhere, chairs are strategically placed. Also the garden is enclosed and not remotely overlooked so I am just in my underpants 😀

Well just to clear up any misunderstanding 🙂
The was a time when I was expressly forbidden to have an internet presence, so I lurked on ukworkshop
When I was finally able to join I introduced myself as a long time lurker, eventually I moved here with others when things went downhill there and carried the name over.
