• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    1950s Joinery Workshop

Apologies to those without Farcebook. Some scary stuff here and I'm sure the bloke operating the circular saw had had a close encounter. Link to scary workshop stuff.

    Awesome Woodcarving

One of the reels from this chap popped up today and I fell down a bit of a rabbit hole watching a lot of his other ones. I am in awe of his skills, there is some truly amazing work there. https://www.facebook.com/jakeweidmann/reels/ The family crest is truly awesome but I think the one I...

    Antique Stanley Line Level

A friend of mine that it turns out has a similar interest in old hand tools as me has acquired a nice old Stanley Line Level. I think a previous owner has done some sprucing up with some Hammerite that has resulted in the numbering becoming indistinct but some searching led me to this...

    Cracked Woody Rebate Plane

I've had this woody hanging around for quite some time and as I have a job it will be ideal for, I thought I'd clean it up and get it working. Unfortunately, on examination, it has a crack in the body that extends through to the mortice that holds there wedge. Anyone have any thoughts on if...

Big Lump of Olive Wood Log

That was a post I made on a thread in the other place that dates back to 2006. I'd bought that log from a chap on eBay sometime prior to that, and it took the two of us to lift it into the back of my Peugeot 206. Not sure how I managed to get it out again. Anyway, it stayed underneath my lathe...

Mechanick Exercises, or, The Doctrine of Handy-works: Applied to the Arts of Smithing, Joinery, Carpentry, Turning, Bricklayery

I've seen this book mentioned often but never seen a copy of it until today when I went searching for it and was able to find various copies of it. There are some downloadable ones, this is pretty good and allows a full download...

    Axminster Cardiff Shop

Found myself in front of the Axminster Cardiff branch on Friday. It's about 45 minutes drive for me and in an area we don't normally go and so I wasn't really aware it was there. So I had to have a bit of a mooch around inside and my other half insisted on accompanying me as the responsible...

I know this is sharpening but...

I was reading a thread on sharpening 'over there' that is descending into the usual from the usual suspects and I was contemplating my jig use which I've decided is intermittent but does happen when I want to. I then thought that what I could do with is something for carving gouges as these are...

    Adjustable Bit

Hi, I have a couple of adjustable bits but this one seems to have something missing. Does anyone know what the piece that is missing looks like? If possible I'd like to make a replacement but I need to know what to make. Just noticed that the underside of the sliding part is toothed so might...

    Record 52E Nut Thread Size

Hi all, Picked up this Record Vice a couple of months ago and decided it's time to get it cleaned up and working again. Giving it a look over though and I notice that one of the nuts that hold the tree quick release plate is missing. Does anyone know what the thread is so I can source one? I...

    It's this a dangerous setup?

I never use the grey wheel on my grinder so when I saw that there are polishing mop adapters available I bought one and have just fitted it and mounted the large polishing wheel I have. I've fitted it up and there is a lot of vibration so it's definitely out of balance. What's the dangers of...

    Mystery Sharpening Stone

Evening. I know the S word is dangerous but I have this big lump of an abrasive stone and was wondering if anyone else had ever seen one and knows what would have been sharpened with it (if that was it's purpose).

    Record 52 Vice Restore Quandary

Hi All, Not sure this qualifies as a restoration as it was more of a de-rusting exercise on an old Record 52 that belonged to my late father-in-law and will hopefully pass on to my son in the future. Mainly by using citric acid for the first time which works a treat. Anyway, I have...

    Patent Search

Can anyone point me to where I can search British patents? I have an engineer's (?) square I obtained a fair few years ago and I thought I'd try to find out some more about it. It has 'Made in England' and 'Pat. No. 497450' on it but I can't find any reference to it and assume I'm looking in...

    Column Finial Repair

Anyone here know anything about finials? We have brick columns either side of our front gate with an element on the top that incorporates a smallish finial. My idiot neighbour has managed to knock off the one on our shared boundary. I don't trust him to fix it with his "strong glue" and I doubt...

Complex Moulding Plane in Need of TLC

Some time ago, which in my mind isn't too long but my wife tells me is far too long, I had taken some mouldings off in my house to repair a hole in a panel on the stairs. While working away and having not finished the repair, I left the mouldings on my bench. #2 son decided that he was going to...

Moulding Plane Maker - Norman Bayliss (1962)

Has anyone seen this? I've been getting interested in moulding planes again recently and it must have registered with the algorithm as this popped up whilst I was trawling through YouTube woodworking videos last night after my other half had retired for the night. Quality isn't great but it...

    Hi from South Wales

Hi All, I don't think I've introduced myself. I joined a few weeks ago but not participated yet. I'm a bit of a lurker anyway but generally have to work up to posting. I am coming back to woodworking after a long break. This was due to my working away from home a lot and my wife taking...
