• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

    Glass for furniture.

So, my wife has an idea for two side tables she'd like. She's got some nice sculptures, and she'd like something that can show them off. As a basic idea, something like this, but with 4 glass sides and some led lighting in the top. I have two questions - first, does it need to be toughened...

Veneering - I could do with some advice.

Ok, time for another first, I'm veneering some speaker cabinets. As it's my first time using veneer I'm not trying complicated, just fairly large, flat areas. I'm thinking of using the method this guy uses - In a nutshell he coats the veneer and the cabinet with PVA, allows it to become...

Where do we go for good table saw blades now?

I'm trying to find a blade for my small tablesaw - it's only got a 200mm blade. I've bought half a dozen lately and they all seem aimed at the portable circular saw - they're all extremely thin and flutter like crazy when trying to cut an inch or so of hardwood, no good for the chessboards I...

    How do you make pens?

Just been reading Steve's post about acquiring a lathe, and Bob's reply where he mentions making pens. At work (a college), we teach a variety of metal turning activities on a dozen big old Harrelsons, Colchesters and a few XYZ lathes. At the end of the turning unit we've been trying to come...

    Boxes for game pieces.

Some already know, but for those that don't, when I started working at my new place a few years ago I had access to a Prototrak cnc lathe and mill. No one else used them, so I got given the keys and told to help myself :) One of the things I decided to do as my learning project was a chess set...

Anybody good with maths? (ChatGPT failed me)

I'm trying to get a calculation solved - I've asked the all knowing Chatgpt this question and got 3 different answers ! So, If I start with an initial investment of £30,000 which grows at 7%, and I top that up with £500 every month (which I increase by 3% a year), how much would I have after 10...

    ChatGPT - artificial intelligence.

Browsing through the news yesterday I found an article about a band of teachers who'd formed a group, with the aim of sharing tips to stop students using artificial intelligence to cheat at exams. Intrigued, I went to have a look at ChatGPT, to see what kind of answers it would give. I asked...

    Maybe Google really is watching....

A while ago I posted up how, while sitting at home, my wife had asked me if I'd ever watched a very long running British soap called 'Emmerdale Farm'. I replied "I used to watch it when I was a kid, with my Mom......when it had Amos and Mr Wilkes in it". Next day my Amazon had DVD box sets of...

This is why I would starve if I worked for myself.

So, my wifes Boss - a woman I've known for 35+ years - asked me to make her 3 window boxes. Simple tray things to hold some plastic troughs. She's happy to pay for quality, she didn't want pine, she wanted 'proper' wood - and they had to be painted white to match the front of her house. I...

Panga Panga - white flecks in grain.

I've never used panga before - what are these white flecks in the grain, and will they show through a french polish finish?

Inlay banding - Anyone looking to get rid of some?

I'm only asking because I've heard a few members mention they're moving, re-organizing, clearing out etc over the last few months. A couple of years ago I bought some inlay banding, and just never got round to using it. In my latest board I've used some and love the look of it. I came to...

A deaf persons internal monologue ?

This is a serious question - I really hope no-one finds it offensive. Yesterday, I was chatting to a small group of young adult students about languages. One of the lads was a Polish guy who speaks excellent English. I said "When I started to learn French many, many years ago, my teacher told...

    CNC wood turning advice wanted.

A few years back I made a couple of chess sets on the cnc machine at work, out of aluminium. I'm thinking of having a go at making some wooden sets to go with the boards I make - probably maple, walnut, possibly rosewood. The only tooling we use is carbide, and the smallest r/h knife tool I...

White French polish - does it separate?

I bought some white French polish a few days ago, for the first time. Is it normal that it separates out? My normal blonde, special pale and buttons don't do this.

Ever wonder how they did computing before computers?

I found this fascinating - how fire control computers worked in navy battleships in WW2. Using cams, gears, differentials and other types of mechanics to do maths - some of it pretty advanced. lr1uK24SND8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lr1uK24SND8 Part 2 5GZa63x3k60...

    Another two chessboards.

Finished another two boards this weekend - both Bolivian rosewood & maple. This one was made to order - 52mm squares. This one, I'm yet to find a buyer for- 56mm squares.

Jerrims Engineers Vice - what to do with it.

I picked up this Jerrims vice that was destined for the scrap. My wife has asked if I'd like to donate it to the small firm she works at, but it's so unusual I'd like to know a bit more about it, especially if it might be worth anything, before I blindly give it away. The normally 'fixed' jaws...
