• Hi all and welcome to TheWoodHaven2 brought into the 21st Century, kicking and screaming! We all have Alasdair to thank for the vast bulk of the heavy lifting to get us here, no more so than me because he's taken away a huge burden of responsibility from my shoulders and brought us to this new shiny home, with all your previous content (hopefully) still intact! Please peruse and feed back. There is still plenty to do, like changing the colour scheme, adding the banner graphic, tweaking the odd setting here and there so I have added a new thread in the 'Technical Issues, Bugs and Feature Requests' forum for you to add any issues you find, any missing settings or just anything you'd like to see added/removed from the feature set that Xenforo offers. We will get to everything over the coming weeks so please be patient, but add anything at all to the thread I mention above and we promise to get to them over the next few days/weeks/months. In the meantime, please enjoy!

Fitting a back-to-wall WC with an offset fitting.

Has anyone done this and can give me some ideas? The offset is needed unfortunately. At least I'm not cussing as much as I used to. Even in this hot weather !

    Google AI or ChatGPT

I've been using AI's for research more and more. For example, LOML and I were trying to remember the female cast member in a TV comedy series from years gone by. We knew Rowan Atkinson was in it but that was all. My approach to this in the past would have been to go to IMDB.com, enter Rowan...

    Spitfire !

Yesterday. What a day ! Fulfilled my boyhood dream. Up for a hour. Flew it for 75% of the time and even did a few rolls. They used to say that you wore the Spitfire like a coat and I can see why. Afterwards Charlie (my pilot) told me that not very many first time flyers in the Spitfire...

    Mystery SMS messages...

Recently had a couple of texts spaced about a fortnight apart that are puzzling. Yesterdays was one telling me that my parcel from Whistl UK had been delivered by Amazon Shipping and that it had been left behind the wheelie bin. A very detailed tracking history. All very strange and, after...

    Milwaukee mini spirit level 100mm

Screwfix have these pocket-sized levels at £4.79. They had a display of them on the counter. 10 or more. All indicated the same level. So I turned them all round the other way to check. The same level. So I bought one ! https://www.screwfix.com/p/milwaukee-spirit-level-4-100mm-/514jj

Geberit Type 240 and Type 340 mechanisms

Just staring blankly at the 'instructions'. I use the term loosely as they are only pictures but there's a load of settings to be worked out. When did toilets get so up themselves with complexity. Has anyone fitted one, please, and can enlighten me ?

Hardly woodworking as we know it ....

LOML came to me yesterday with a request for a couple of tampers for her seed growing. She'd found a couple of knobs that she liked and which suited her hands. The only 'clever' bit was shaping the corners to fit into the pot.

8mm diamond drill bit recommendations sought

Can anyone please point me in the direction of a decent make? Not like the utterly useless and waste of money one from Toolstation. You know, the one that wears out after one hole (wet cut) and even if it hadn't worn out, the hole down the middle is full of the remains of the first hole and...

Osmo UV-Protection oil - still sticky and tacky

Our latest addition to the garden is a cedar clad building for LOML. The suppliers used a roller to apply Osmo UV-Protection oil and it is so, so sticky and tacky to the touch. Talking to Osmo technical department, the building supplier neglected to let the cedar weather for 12 weeks which...

    Festool TS55 lock washer problem

Changing the blade yesterday, I think I managed to 'lose' the lock washer inside the TS55. I say 'I think' as I heard a metal on metal sound and thought it was the washer landing on the replacement blade. But I couldn't see it anywhere. So I've come to the conclusion that it is somewhere...

    Do NOT buy NoMorePly

DO NOT BUY NOMOREPLY. After a lifetime of renovation and building work this is up there at or near the top of the list for Worst Purchase, Why? Very very hard. Requires a special blade in a track saw to cut it. No way can you score and snap like you can with Hardibacker or similar boards. You...

    Battery chain saws

Having suffered another 'stutter to go' - even after it running OK a few weeks back, I know I can stick the carb in an ultrasonic cleaner...along with the one from the hedge trimmer but that necessitates finding everything and so given deadlines I was thinking about simply getting a new one...

    Keeping out water?

Neighbour has just had these gates installed so I went for a nose. The verticals go into a mortise..not sure if it goes through or not. I got to thinking if there was a better way to do it as I could see water tracking down very easily. Certainly if it wasn’t a through mortise then that...

    Of the moment …..

..as I’ve reached the end as a healthy volunteer participant for a clinical trial of a vaccine for Norovirus, it’s freed me up for other trials. So I’ve signed up to trial a vaccine to prevent any bird flu pandemic. Think this is my fifth clinical trial.

    'To the finder'

Don't you just love how insurance companies wriggle out?

Just had the drain man in. Looks like there's a lot of tree roots in the sewage pipe from house to septic tank. Jet washing and rodding has, so far, failed and so Plan B is a spinning cutter on the end of a rod. If that fails we're looking at replacing. The drain guy suggested that I see if...

Moving an outside mains stopcock. Or not.

This is the current situation. The relatively new Talbot Matrix stopcock is going to be hidden by us extending the terrace over the top of it with block/beam and then large heavy tiles. This stopcock will not be then easily and simply accessible. Jury-rigging some sort of long-distance...

Permitted development, verandahs and stand-alone garden buildings

Does anyone know if the restrictions on verandahs applies to standalone garden buildings ? I'm thinking of this hypothetical case. Take a verandah (dotted green) and the roof extended out to cover it (dotted red), is that allowed under Permitted Development rules ?
